shifter loose, bushing or linkage??
Hey, so my shifter is really loose, it feels like nuetral when its in gear.
I bought some es bushings and am gonna put them in soon.
im not sure wahts its called but its the gromet/bushing that the shifter directly sits in. im trying to find a good after market one to avoid the stealership.
Basically i just want some feedback and what might fix this and if anyone knows what that piece is called and where i can find it.
thanks in advance for the help

Yeah i'm in the same boat as you.
I bought some ES bushings too and waiting for them to show up.
But when I was under neath the car today, but bushing that looks like it needs to be replaced looked like this:
Where would I find this one?

Number 8 in the diagram? Dude they're $13 from Honda, less if you order from a place like majestic Honda.
Link part numbers and prices (assuming this is for a '92 - '00 Civic, besides '99 - '00 Si) --> http://www.hondaautomotiveparts.com/...y5=SHIFT+LEVER
Dude, look at the diagram and figure it out. If you can't read a very basic shift linkage diagram, your time turning wrenches will come to a very abrupt ending.

Looks like your talking about #11. It is a rubber boot that holds the ball of the shifter and appears to be held in place by #9. I just installed my ES bushing last weekend and that was the only thing not included that needs replacing. That could def cause the shifter to feel loose as if it was out of gear.

I know that picture looked like it was the nut, but I meant the bushing. When I was moving the shifter around from under neath the car, it looked like it was the culprit.
thanks for all the input guys but im getting kinda confused at whos talking to who lol
i was thinking i needed number 6 but one guy said 8 and another said 11.
I bought the es bushings already, so should i buy 6, 8 or 11?
sorry for being lazy and not quoting, but i think 94eg8 said #8 and speed junkie said #11 thx again this makes my life soo much easier

david 420 you need number 8. 11 is below that. and 6 is a dust cover.
you're talking about the shifter itself right not where the bottom ball bolts to the lever right?

Here is the diagram for the shifter for my car, 97 civic coupe dx ej6

I dont know why the numbering is different on this but it looks exactly the same
Im going to buy 8 and 11 on first diagram and 7 and 10 on this one since they are the same. Maybe the first one is for eg?
Side note, what is a bitch pin and do i need that too?
Also im thinking i might need #6 on the diagram i posted should i get that as well?
I know this is getting really confusing but i just want to make sure i get all the parts i need, i bought the es bushings which i know the one is 16 on the diagram i posted, but i dont know what the other 2 are, can someone tell me what numbers they are, and is the gold pin #11?

thanks again

22 in your diagram is the bitch pin and that thing will never wear out.
I do believe that is 11. I didntuse it because I installed a skunk2 shifter and used what was provided with it.

so the gold pin is 11
how bout those other two circular bushings?
im gonna get 7 and 10 but not sure if i should get 6, what do u think?
thank u so much for helping me with this
I'm not positive, but I think that gold pin is actually number 19 and the two bushings replace 14
7 you probably need, that's the plastic cage the shifter rotates in. 10 is just a rubber dust boot IIRC, and 6 is definitely a rubber dust boot.
so should i order a new bitch pin??
I think your right about the pin being 19, but i was thinking the bushings were 4
and should just get 7? i dont need 6 or 10?

the bitch pin is 22
i same its this cause ive done swaps and used a bolt instead of a bitch pin and had this wobbly shifter. i put a bitch pin in and it was great

ok
have you done a swap on your car?
does it have a bitch pin?
if it does have one then thats not your issue.
if theres a bolt instead of a pin then theres your issue,
if theres a bolt not a pin. you can fix it by putting a bolt through there that fits tight.

The only thing that will really make the shifter wiggle side to side when in gear is the shifter busing or the joint on the shift linkage. The "bitch pin" is not going to wear out because its not a moving part.
These are the parts that would wear:
#7 but its highly unlikely unless it broke.
#'s 4, 5, 11, 21, 23, 24. This is the most likely reason the shifter is loose
#18 this will wear after time but is not directly connected to the shifter, its just a support.
#12 the joint on the shift linkage close to the "bitch pin" #22. This will def get loose and sloppy.
Trust me I have replaced all the parts except 4,5,11,23 because I used an after market short shifter. I had a Skunk2 and the bearings where trashed. It always wiggled side to side. I had to crank on the bolt to tighten it up but it would always come loose. The car was a 96 and the shifter parts were original to the car. I found that #7 and #18 really didnt need replacing but I already had the parts.
P.S just an F.Y.I if these are original parts get ready for them to be really rusty and possibly snap.
