Nothing from an EW is going to bolt up to an ED. What the hell is a DB15a3?

EW heads will directly bolt to D15A blocks, and the D16A1 block. D16A1 head will also bolt to D15A blocks and EW blocks.

The ECU probably won't work, I'm certain the ECU and pinout was changed when they went to the D15A series.

And of course none of this will work in a 4th gen, this is 3rd gen stuff.

The DOHC head bolts to the SOHC block in the 3rd gen?

Yes, the D16A1 head bolts to the 3rd gen civic block -- EW/D15A.

"The final E-family engine was the EW, presented along with the all new third generation Honda Civic in September 1983. Displacing 1,488 cc (1.5 L; 90.8 cu in), the EWs were SOHC 12-valve engines. Early 3 barrel EW1s produced from 58 to 76 hp (43 to 57 kW) and 108 to 114 N·m (79.7 to 84.1 lb·ft). The fuel injected EW3 and EW4 produced 91 hp (68 kW) at 5,500 rpm and 126 N·m (92.9 lb·ft) at 4,500 rpm. The "EW" name was replaced by the Honda D15 series, with the EW (1, 2, 3, 4, and 5) renamed to D15A (1, 2, 3, 4, and 5) in 1987. It also received a new engine stamp placement on the front of the engine like the "modern D series" (1988+)." Wikipedia quote.. No reason for the family name change was written in this article, without that information, I would think one should assume there were some differences in design.. I can only afford to do this once..

Will the 1987 CRX D15A3, and 1986 CRX EW3 cylinder head interchange? Rebuild kits for both engines are listed under the same part number with several generic rebuild kit distributors, id like to put my existing EW3 cylinder head and FI unit on a D15A3 shortblock, using my EW3 ecu. Is this feasible?

Not the D16 but the D15A3 (sorry for the confusion). I was led to believe the EW3 is a direct descendant of the D15A3.. I have a line on a D15A3 reman shortblock, and want to use the EW3 top end on a D15A3 short block. So What ECU should I use to make this go? would it be the D15A3 ECU? should I have the D15A3 reflashed? I am totally ignorant, and would respect the info here, but if I would have to swap ECU's on the engine, I'm curious as to why.. I mean Im using the Fuel injection, cylinder head, and exhaust off of the EW3, why wouldn't I use the EW3 ECU in this case when all the relevant systems (Head and EFI) are off of the EW3?

So D15A3 and EW3 are equal for all practical purposes..

Not sure what you are trying to do, really. If you have an EW3 or D15A3, use the cylinder head with your intake and exhaust manifolds and don't "reflash" anything. All EW and D15A cylinder heads interchange.

I just threw out the fact that you can use a D16A1 head on those series of engines as well because it's a nice swap if you are looking to go DOHC and MPFI. You'll have to use the harness from an Integra or 3rd gen Civic Si or CRX Si. This is just random info. I'm not telling you to do it, just saying it's an option.

Yes, you can do what you are trying to do. (EW3/D15A3 are identical engines). Use EVERYTHING off of your engine and the cylinder head +rocker assembly + cam from the other engine and everything will be fine.

Right on.. I was pretty sure this was the case, just wanted to make sure..

No probs, you might find more knowledgeable people if you post in this forum though:

Also try www.redpepperracing.com for pre ED civic stuff.
