Have a eg8 with a JDM D15B and had it running on a p28. The other day I was parked idling and the car just died and saw smoke coming from the area where the ecu is. So I opened up the ecu and found this:

There is a large capacitor next to the B plug that burned up. I replaced the ecu with a P08 I had. The car seems to run fine till I've been driving it around for more than half an hour it starts to bog out. I'm concerned that this ecu is gonna fry next and the bogging is annoying. No cel's. Inspected all the wiring near the ecu and fuse box area yesterday and didn't find anything wrong. Any suggestions on what is causing this issue

The electrolyte in the capacitor dried out due to being 17+ years old and the cap shorted. If you're handy with a soldering iron you can simply replace the cap and bridge any burnt traces. It wasn't caused by anything other than old age.

 

If you aren't good with a soldering iron, find yourself a local nerd to replace it for you.

 

I'm not concerned with repairing the burned ecu it's that my car is bogging out with the new ecu
I've used the ecu in the past and it ran fine. Maybe I have to reset the timing?

 

The title of your thread would make you think it was hence the reason I came in!

Well the giant picture of the old ECU coupled with " I'm concerned that this ecu is gonna fry next" is probably what is confusing the issue. And the Thread title "ECU fried" isn't helping either.

Which P08 do yo have? According to info out there, there is the one that runs the D15b that is the VTEC-E and the D15B VTEC that utilizes the small case P08.

So I'm going to have to assume it ran fine with the P28 since you failed to mention that in the OP. Have you checked timing? I'm not sure this is the case because the running rough after about 30 minutes thing is throwing me.

 

Yes car ran fine with the previous ecu. Haven't checked timing yet but that's going to be my next step

 

The JDM D15B Vtec-e (D15Z1 equivalent) uses a P84
