Was cruising home earlier down the highway about 70mph and 5th gear just went out. The shifter stayed in place but the tranny basically went into neutral. I didnt hear any noises or anything. Had to drive it home in 4th and had no more luck with fifth on a few extra tries. Transmission has always shifted perfect with no grinds and I drive it easy.

No everything is tight. The other gears work fine.

 

if you put the car in 5th and let off the clutch does it stall out?

 

No it doesnt stall.....just acts as if its in neutral. The shifter goes all the way forward like its supposed to. All other gears work.

 

My guess would be the shift fork or something related specifically to it. 5th gear has it's own separate shift fork.

 

Could that go bad while driving in gear? I never grind the gears.....that requires tranny removal right?
