crank pulley bolt keeps coming loose
hey guys, im looking at purchasing a 93 accord for a good price. the only problem with it supposedly is that the crank pulley bolt keeps coming loose. supposedly they just replaced the harmonic balancer(not sure if its brand new or what) but never said if the bolt is new. it also has a washer on it and I was told by a friend that it shouldnt have one.. any ideas if this could possibly be something serious? any help is greatly appreciated.
yes it could mean the crank is damaged. when it backs out it could mean possibly damaged threads in the crank snout, you can try to load it up with threadlocker, but ir may need a new crank or a new engine.
im just worried because im supposed to be buying the car in the morning and not sure what to do now.... im paying $500 for it and with perfect body and interior, just engine has close to 200k miles on it... if anything i could just get another engine
at that price ill get it lmao the engine its self would cost that or less if you get it at a junkyard. but just the short block that car is free my man go for it

ok I just got back from getting the car. Drove it back about 12 miles home with no problem but squeeking. I was told that when they changed the harmonic balancer, they got a bolt from a junkyard so im thinking it could possibly just need a new bolt. Are there any signs of the crank being bad?

If your bolt is coming out, one of two things it going on. The threads are damaged or the bolt isn't being torqued properly.
Get a large torque wrench and a crank pulley tool (Rent for free from autozone/checker/o'reillys) and torque the crank pulley bolt to 181 ft*lbs.
If the threads are damaged, you can repair them with a threaded insert or helicoil. Make sure you get a thread repair that can hold 181 ft*lbs of torque.

check out the timing belt write-up on how to properly torque the crank pulley bolt.
just got done messing with it. i was told by someone that the bolt kept coming loose. well, I cant even break it lose. the bolt is tight but its the pulley that is wobbling. Im thinking either its wore down even though it was supposedly changed or its the wrong bolt which is too long. im trying to find someone with an impact to take it off, tried with a breaker bar with a cheater pipe and no luck
do yourself a favor and take out the one they used including any washers. buy a new one from honda, part# 90017-PT0-003. its comes with the proper washer. torque it to spec (181 ft lbs).
there is a good write-up in the FAQ that will help with everything

the tool i rented to hold the pulley in place didnt even fit. she had the wrong bolt in it with 6 washers... took alot alot alot of hell to get the bolt off... the balancer is no more good. the key never broke and the slot for the key on the balancer is now like 2 inches wide... the balanacer has no more splines in it but the crankshaft still looks good... what is the measurement of the crankshaft so i can check with one of those things to see if it wore out... im just hoping the threads arent stripped out in the shaft.... 89 bucks just for the pulley which was supposed to include the bolt washers and everything but just comes with the harmonic balancer and woodruff key... now i gotta price the bolt at honda or just go to pull apart since i done spent all my money almost.... i really think god(if there is one) really freakin hates me...
im gonna get pics up of the balancer to show how much damage it has. the guy at autozone was trying to argue with me that the crankshaft was supposed to have splines on it also but in my opinion that would defeat the point of the key cus the teeth would hold it in place instead of the key.

The crakshaft pully does not have a spline, it has a key like you saw. go on to bernardiparts.com and order a new pully and bolt. make sure to clean out the old threads before installing the new one. there are other crank holders on line that should be the right size hex.
