Hello all,
just picked up a 96 civic ex 2dr 5spd. There were no speakers in the car, but alot of sub/amp wiring (which was garbage).
I bought some sony 6x9 speakers for the back and 5.25s for the front. I got the backs in tonight, but didn't have any sound.
Which is the negative and positive wires? Also, in the front there is a 'clip' which I need to splice into but it has 4 wires so which do I need to splice?
Also, not music related, my shifter. There is alot of play when in gear, I can move the shifter alot left and right while in gear. Is this a bushing?
Thanks

Do not splice anything. Get a proper wiring adapter.

The plug for the radio means the speaker leads also. If the PO didn't totally hack all the wires then use the adapter. If he did then you have a lot of wires to start tracing and maybe rewiring.

okay thanks, i'll check and see if they used a proper harness for the radio.
If they did and thats NOT the case, then which wires do I need to splice to put the speakers in?
I have the rears in, but I didn't get any sound to them.
The front have a clip which has 4 wires though

I don't know what you're talking about when you say it has a 4 wire clip. All the power and speaker wires run through that one plug under the dash.

I took the cover off the door panel where the speaker is and there was a clip that had 4 wires coming out of it.
Don't really care about what's in the door. Trace the colors of the wires at the main plug to the doors and rear deck.
You said it have amps/lots of wires? Did it have a 4 channel amp??
You will need to check the HU and make sure the internal amp is turned on, if it has the ability to turn it off, if that isn't it, insure the wires going to the HU are connected.
I know I'll get **** for it, but on my car I just cut those speaker plugs off. They're for the OEM speakers, and wont work with aftermarket speakers.
You either need to cut them off, or buy the plugs.
DO NOT CUT the hu's plugs off. Hopefully, it hasn't already been done.

the PO had a billion wires, including 2 HUGE power wires run through the engine bay hooked up to a circuit break type switch that you'd see in a house. I mean the kid must of been a complete idiot with wiring. I pulled out telephone wires too it was just a mess.
Ill definitely take my HU out tomorrow and check all the wires and such. I thought they connnected through the doors since my car (00 ex) they did.
What about the rears? They only had 2 wires hanging on each side and I connected the speakers (tried both wires since I didnt know which was pos/neg) and I still got nothing

I hate when I see that. All you need is one solid power wire, to a disturbition block.Regardless, pull the HU and inspect the connections.
There is a plug behind the fender, door harness, to dash harness.
You should only have 2 wires per side, +/-. However with normal speakers it doesn't really matter if you switch them around.
You need to make sure those wires are even getting power. (HU)
About $20 for the car.

How do I know if I need a shifter bushing though?
When I'm in gear or even in neutral, I can move the shifter significantly right/left.
When I'm in gear I can move it like I'm in neutral? They seem good, just want to order the correct item thats all.
@CiviDx are those speaker connectors universal? They don't say anything about being model specific

They should, the plug looks fine.
However, if it put you at ease, go to a stereo shop. it will cost more, but if they dont work you can return them.

You know you need new shifter bushings because what you're describing PERFECTLY matches the symptoms of shot shifter bushings. Get some from BWR. Cheaper than Energy, and they're the exact same thing. I don't mean "kind of" the exact same thing, I mean literally the EXACT SAME THING, from the same manufacturing plant.
