Default 1992 accord wagon - no start condition

Hello all,

I have a 1992 accord wagon and it just stopped turning over. I believe it to be the starter but I've been reading posts about the main relay possibly being bad. if it helps with diagnoses when I try to start and turn the key over, it just clicks and I lose power in the vehicle (radio shuts off and presets reset... strange) perhaps the alternator went bad and the battery is low on power?? doesn't seem that way.

Anyhow any help with this is greatly appreciated. I want to work smart not hard in getting the fixed and back on the road.

Thanks,

-J

what you describe is either a dead battery or bad ground on the battery (could be elsewhere but that one is the one that gets the crustiest).

test the battery. you can have it tested for free at an autozone. if the battery is ok jump the starter. assuming you know where the starter is there are two main connections at the starter. one is a small connector(s terminal) that you can pull right off. the other is a 10 or 12mm bolt(i can't remember the size) that connects the positive power wire from the battery to the starter which i will refer to as +. to jump the starter simply get an decent sized wire(i like to use 8 guage or larger 8-4-2-1-0 the larger the wire the smaller the gauge). unplug the s terminal plug and then touch the acquired wire from the s terminal to the 10 or 12mm + bolt. if the starter makes the same sound as it does when you try to start the car with the key then congratulations you dont have a problem with you signal wire circuit and either your starter is bad, battery is bad, power wire from battery to starter is bad, or your battery connections need to be cleaned or tightened. if the starter cranks while jumping let us know.

welcome to honda-tech

if you are confused by my lack of ability to separate complete thoughts and info let me know

bdmlilburn the size is 12 mm for the main connection for the starter. Im starting to think the altenator is bad Im going to take the battery in and have it tested just in case. but it would be awfully odd to have a battery go bad out of the blue. I appreciate the responses though.

Update: Starter solenoid was fried. Good news for me only $45 bucks to rebuild the starter. Honda back on the road this week.

Great to hear! ^

It's always nice to know there's one more wagon out there...
