Which part, the one with the boot? Are we looking at the top of the transmission? It looks like the shift cable.

it moves around a lot, and if you notice, the cable is frayed on the right side one. the problem we're having is that when in 1st, the car struggles to get up to speed and he usually has to put some gas into it to get it going

Sounds like a tranny problem not the shift cable. The cable transfers power from the tranny. Does it shift normal when the engine is off?

I think it sounds like and engine problem... either way, even if the symptoms are unrelated to the cable, it still needs to be set right.

huh? maybe i just don't understand your wording... the cable transfers motion from the shift lever to the shifter mechanism in the trans. please clarify.

OP: find a cable in the junk yard. they don't fail often so even a well used one should last you the remaining life of the vehicle.

If I recall correctly, on a shift cable set up, there is a linkage that goes from the shift cable to the transmission. There is a boot on either end of the shift cable. Motion is correct, but when the engine spins and the tc hooks up, how does the power go from tranny to shift cable? But then again, I'm not a tranny expert nor will I ever be. Just sounds like its either an engine or tranny issue.
