Default 90 CRX Value

I have been looking for a decent college car and stumbled upon a 1990 CRX locally at a shop. I know the mechanic and trust him. He doesn't know much on the history. Hasn't done anything to the motor, has 208k. 5spd tranny shifts fine. Motor burns a little oil under hard acceleration. Clutch is starting to slip, but it might just be out of adjustment. The interior is all there but has been dismantled.

Good:
Motor runs strong. No obvious problems or codes.
Body is in pretty good shape. Has an aftermarket front bumper. The rest of the body kit is included.
New tires and aftermarket wheels
Rear disc brake conversion
5spd tranny shifts smooth
Has aftermarket header and exhaust
Has CAI

Bad:
Motor burns a little oil
Car needs a paint job and a little body work
High mileage
Pass. Door panel shot.
Needs interior put back together
Sunroof was broke and patched with wood. Doesn't leak.
Clutch is starting to slip
Missing drivers side turn signal housing
Has stupid non-adjustable uncomfortable racing seats
No power steering
Has a small battery drain. He hasn't looked into it at all.
Small exhaust leak (donut gasket)

I could probably pick it up for around 1500. What is this thing worth? From what I can tell it drives pretty good and runs good. I'm just looking for a commuter but I'm not afraid of a project. I can put in a clutch without a problem.

I can add some tech here...no crx in the US came with power steering.
FWIW, I'd offer the guy about $800. The wood sunroof sounds classic!

Unfortunately I don't think he'd go that low on it. His asking price is 2000.00. I'm thinking 1200.00 is his bottom dollar. I know the guy and hes not hiding anything from me and what he says is true.

Adding it up I could do okay...
100.00 for timing belt/water pump tune up
120.00 clutch set
100.00 rustoleum paint job, my vo-tec collision repair class mates can fix the minimal body work.
300.00 for OEM seats, door panel, misc. interior parts.

If I paid 1500 for it that brings my total investment up to 2120.00. After that it should be a sharp car and a nice driver. I can have the clutch job and battery drain fixed in a week at school using their lifts at no cost to me.

sounds like $750-800 to me. what trim is it? dx/hf/si? for an si, it might be doable. but i would not pay that for an hf or dx.

Prob a Si if it has a sunroof. Wouldn't give the guy more than $900 personally.. If the motor has a bunch of miles run 20w50 in it.. would be better for it and maybe cut down on the consumption.. Sounds like its gonna need more work than assumed.. With cars like this (that havent been taken care of) its too easy to spend $20 here and $60 there just to get things "right"..

It is an Si model.

Im gonna go look at it again today. If I don't find anything major wrong with it Ill try to see if he'll take 1200 cash for it. I could prolly sell the aftermarket crap on it for 2-300.

One other question is parts changeability. Would seats from a 89 2dr Accord fit the CRX?

I checked it out again. Everything seems to work fine. Engine runs strong without issues, smokes a little at high rpms. Someone has ran the PCV out of the intake and just into the air. Doesn't overheat and runs pretty smooth. Unfortunately he still wanted 1500.00. He said he will think it over and to check back tomorrow to see if he'll go any lower.

If he doesn't come down, tell him you'll get back to him. Wait a couple weeks and if he still has it he'll probably take less.

He said his plan was to either sell it to me as is or fix it up himself and sell it for more money.

Another positive I noticed is the car hes zero rust. Everything is solid. Im gonna see if 1200 gets it. Thats my top dollar.
