Default B16a Hesitation, Idle Fluctuating, No V-tec

whats up everyone, I currently purchased a 2000 civic si. I had one 12 yrs ago when they first hit the dealerships, this one i purchased i noticed has a jdm b16a. The block is stamped B16a with no numbers next to it. Car has been driving fine till all of the sudden the car started hesitating really bad when i was cruising on the highway part throttle (chuckling), yet when i hit the gas it goes away. After awhile i noticed that i got a check engine light and v-tec stopped working. It only happens part throttle and when im stopped my idle fluctuates up and down, from 800 rpm to about 2000 rpm continuously and sometimes is stays at 2000. Ide really appreciate it if someone can help me. I havent been on this forum in over 7 yrs. Im trying to get back in the game

How much does it usually cost to pull the code ? dealer is probably going to rape me. Also, is my motor OBD0 or OBD1 ? Block is stamped b16a with no number after

Cost? Nothing if you do it yourself. Check the bottom sticky on this forum.

check engine light keeps coming on and off. usually comes on after 30 minutes of driving or more. when its off i v-tec engages, but when on nothing. I read the sticky and it gave me no codes, so i took it to the dealer and no codes there either. dealer said to bring it back when the lights on. what are the symptoms of a cel light that has to do with the IAC valve ? And do any cel lights that have to do with the IAC valve disengage v-tec. Ive also noticed that my temp gauge is dead smack in the middle. when it usually is a little lower.

No you didn't. Also, YOU have to get the codes.

Stop going to the dealer. Here is what to do:

5) Back in the driver's seat, turn the key to the ON(II) position. The CEL will come on like normal but will then begin to flash.

**By counting the number of flashes, you can decipher the CEL code**
A LONG flash (1 second) is 10
A SHORT flash (0.5 second) is 1

For example, two long flashes followed quickly by two short flashes would be code 22. If there is more than one code, each code will be separated by a 2.5 second gap.
In your case, do step 4) without turning off the car and forget step 5), you want to keep the car running. Come back with a code.

if the car is drivable go to autozone or advanced auto parts. they scanned my codes for free or try to bribe them with a couple bucks . You also got the infamous honda idle too....
Bad/clogged Idle air control valve, Sensor is not connected, Vacuum leak, or a vacuum hose fell off(mostly on the back of Intake manifold) Or air in coolant system.
Im not sure if all the problems above can effect vtec to engage.

could be the coolant temp sensor on the head that sends the signal to the ecu. caused me alot of the same problems you had w/ my b16a2. get ur codes and go from there!
