Default My first turbo manifold....

This is my first from scratch turbo manifold... im pretty happy with how it turned out but would love input on what i should do better next time

the raw goods

all tacked together....

my makeshift plate to keep it flat while welding the flange on... worked just fine

all welded up...

this is about how i was running my tungsten grind and distance out with a #10 cup

some weld close ups

messed around with a couple different styles and amperages on the bottom to get it dialed in

played with fusion vs fill rode welding and decided i liked just the fusion weld for all this.

You need to bevel your pieces more their is almost no bevel on some of those pieces. Did you purge your welds?

not a bad first try at all josh. dont fusion weld manifolds, they are undercut pretty badly, i'd go over those welds and add filler on top. one thing i've learned that makes welds look REALLY nice is to literally do a knife edge bevel, have PERFECT fitup and go LOW on amps, im talking 30-35ish with backpurge, 100% pedal and dip the rod as fast as you can to get the 'ripples' tight.

basically your goal should be to use as little heat as possible while still getting full penetration, and the key to that is bevel/fitup/prep. once you have that nailed down, your welds will look MONEY

Looks good but as said a lot of under cut and purging is a must ,

Wow really nice job! I see your sporting the HF auto darken and welding gloves They actually work really well...the gloves are way to thick for tig IMO though.. I would get some Tillman 24Cl it will help A TON in feeding the filler consistently and they are only like 10-15$. You could even use a mechanics glove for the filler hand to have even more dexterity.

Do What everyone else said and also make sure to clean your work pieces really well if you haven't been I see a little bit of contamination on some of the beads. Work on being a little more consistent with the filler rod dip spacing. Good work though!

yeah guys. in my head i knew all those things but for some reason i just didn't do them.

i didn't backpurge or use a gaslense which i was annoyed with to begin with but i just want to get this car done and back together so bad now that i just said "f it get it done".

i need to get a better grinding set up to do bevels, all i used to do this manifold was a metal chop saw and a hand held grinder. I knew i should spend more time beveling everthing and all that but like i said i just wanted it done.

Luckily its not for a customer or anyone else its for me and im satisfied with this one so its no biggie. if it was for someone else or was getting paid to build it i deff would have taken more time.

thanks for the input though fellers. thats how we get better.

don't rush, it isn't worth the end result.

go to harbor freight and pick up their 12" disc sander, i have 2 of those and been using them for almost 3 years now with no issues. awesome for beveling. theyre like 100 each

Above all this is most important. When you rush, corners are cut, mistakes are made and results are less than impressive.

The whole "slow and steady wins the race" quote we've all heard since grade 2 is pretty fitting here.

When you've done 14508774365823450707 manifolds like Toxic; it's a little easier to hasten the process.

Not bad for your first time. I would take a little extra time to clean the pieces before welding them together. You'll get a better, more consistent weld that way
