honda crx transmission question
The synchronizers aare going out in my transmission and I'm unsure if I should get it rebuilt or buy a new one. The gears are still fine. I have a manual 1.6l SI engine its a 1989. Any ideas or links would be much appreciated. I work on cars a decent amount but never taken a transmission apart. Saw a rebuilt kit with the sleeve and rings of 80 and transmissions for 300-800 gauge by use
Well I can tell you most of the time it's not syncros that go bad but rather the sleeve itself or the synchro rings. Tearing apart a SOHC is even easier than a DOHC trans (and those are pretty easy). The only way you will know exactly what is bad is to tear it apart and go from there. I have never seen the sleeves, rings, and synchros for $80 anywhere. My logic has always been if you rebuild it yourself (assuming you can do it right) you will have a mostly new transmission. If you buy a used one it could be in the same or worse shape as the one you already have.
There are quite a few write-ups and a couple books on how to do this, but the Internet should suffice.
