Default Odo and trip not working correctly

I've searched and found a few things but not exactly what I'm looking for. I bought a used set of guage clusters for my del sol. Everything works on it except the odometer and trip meter and here is what it does.

If I hit the trip reset button a few times it starts working for a little bit. Both will count up and then just stop randomly. Once I went half a mile, next was 3miles, then 1 mile. So I'm not real sure whats going on.

My next question is, if the odometer and trip are just broken is there a way to swap just that part from my old cluster into the one I bought?

It's working fine. The odometer and trip work just fine with the old gauges put back in.

That was one of my questions. Can you just replace the odometer part or do you have to replace the entire cluster?
