This happened due to muffler shops installing sub-par catalyst with insufficient materials, only being good for the initial test after replacement, but often not durable to last two years down the road for the next test.

Rightfully exhaust shops now have to use a catalyst that is E.O. CARB approved and warranty it for parts/installation costs at the rate of five years/50,000 miles. This is great for the typical owner of a vehicle.

However, for the enthusiast whom prefers doing repairs themselves, most 'bolt-in' catalysts are now no longer legal for sale here in Calif. The manufactures have yet to catch up with all makes/models for bolt-in installations.

I don't think any test station will look for the date code during testing. It is illegal to install since you are willfully installing an unapproved part on your car post Jan '09. Keep in mind if you plan on selling the car, if the new owner knows that the new catalyst is not legal and was installed after the Jan '09 date then you could be held liable.

No. You have to instal an E.O. CARB approved cat. Doubling up on 2 non CARB cats won't work.

A Carb approved catalyst installed for $140? That's not bad at all. Hell 20years ago it was $250 installed. Make sure it actually is a carb approved catalyst.
