Default Loud Vibration/Buzzing/Grinding After Shifting Up

Hey everyone, my 98 Accord MT started making a loud, awful noise today and I haven't been able to find any similar posts anywhere. Any help is appreciated.

The noise sounds like a very fast metallic vibrating or some sort of buzzing/grinding and occurs during a few scenarios. First, when I shift up and the RPMs are @3000 or higher. If I don't accelerate as fast, then the noise doesn't happen. It is not during the shifting, but after the new gear has engaged. It will last a couple seconds, then taper off quickly.

Second, when I am in 4th gear and just coasting without any pedals pressed down. There will be no noise and then it seems that when the engine has slowed to a certain point the noise starts up. It goes away if i shift or push the clutch in. The same if I am in 2nd and use the gear to slow down (around a corner, traffic, etc.). As the car decelerates while in gear, the noise happens.

The car feels fine and all shifting is smooth. The car does need an oil change.

I'm just looking to see if I can hold out until the weekend or if it should get checked out before driving places.

Thanks.

Its hard to say if you have the same sound as me. But i had a ls swapped civic that did this and it turned out to be the throw out bearing. But i would suggest having it check out if you can't get a solid answer. My civic sound wasnt loud enough to be scary but loud enough not to ignore. I drove it for 7 months like that though and nothing happend. But i wouldnt recommend doing that.

Certain RPMs can cause rusted heat shields to vibrate. Free to check, easy to diagnose and repair.

Thanks, lazlong, for the suggestion about the heat shield. I did another search about that and found some posts that sound exactly what I'm going through. Hopefully that's all it is. I'll take it in this weekend to get fixed.
