Is there supposed to be a cover over this gear on my transmission. its a 98 integra, with a b18c1.

Yes a cover is missing. It was missing off my old gsr too but I never put one on it. I sold it and never remembered it.

Important enough for Honda to put it there. Yet tons of people dont use it

 

It's called a "Clutch Case Cover", #1... http://www.acuraautomotiveparts.org/...s=&view=normal $25 or less at the dealer, under $5 at your local PicknPull.

It is there to prevent debris from entering the clutch case, you do not want a rock off the road thrown up there, it can damage the flywheel and take a "chunk" out of your lower engine case. 94

Type r covers are made of aluminum and help join the engine to tranny. Even the stamped steel ones use brackets that help join the engine and tranny. I couldn't tell from your pic if they were installed but if not you should get them. They are the two brackets in the second pic
