Default ls/vtec or ls build??

Just bout an ls motor and want to to a complete rebuild. Ive been researching a lot and im liking the ls build over the ls/vtec. Any suggestions on this? I dont wanna go too crazy just something fun to drive, it would be my dd also. My plans are p30 pistons, shotpeen ls rods, ITR oil pump, t-belt, water pump. All OEM LS bearings? Complete head rebuild also but not too sure yet what valvetrain to use. Any other recomendations please feel free to add. Thanks

LS all motor builds are wastes of time IMHO....the heads are garbage..go LSV...since your tearing the motor apart and building it anyway..LS turbo is also a good idea....

How is a "ls" garbage? your dumb kid.

If you want a daily driver ls, like i do, get a v-tec conversion kit, unless your going turbo, don't turbo a v-tec, your just looking for problems down the road, especially if your wanting a dd. Upgrade the valve terrain, bottom end work, throttle body and intake mani... what else?

what is your goal whp/tq?

if you haven't, suspension upgrades are much more "fun to drive" than engine mods, IMO.
I had both LS turbo and LSV, the turbo set-up was much more "fun to drive". The time and money spent on a LS/V convert. or LS build could be had with a decent turbo kit set-up. You will get MUCH MORE power in the end going boost. I ran mine at 10psi daily driver on stock internals, made 249whp/225ish tq. Even on 7-8 psi would be more safe.

To me, my opinion if your going to be a n/a ls build, LSV just seem's smarter because your getting that higher compression compared to low compression without v tec, but if your going to stay low compression, build the internals and boost the mother****er.

But look at it like this, if your going to turbo your car, you need a good turbo, no ebay! and a good turbo is like 2000-2500$ so instead of a turbo you can spend 500-2000$ on valve terrain and others like bigger intake mani, throttle body, pistons and bottom end work, and still have a pretty damn fast daily driver.

Hp goal is prolly around 180. I know it's achievable. I'm def not going boost right now. Too much money at this time. Still not 100percent sure yet on my choice. Im in no rush either. Gonna start a build thread when i choose

if you're looking to go all motor, don't even think of an LS head. you'll be starting with a huge handicap.

So, how're the drugs down where you live?

You can get a solid, brand spanking new turbo that will suit your wants for $1100. Alternatively, you can get a busted one for $100, and get it rebuilt for $500. Alternatively again, you can buy a used turbo still in good condition for $400.

If you want to build an NA motor, you're looking at high compression pistons, upgraded rods, and a fair bit of headwork. Parts and labor costs later, you'll have more power piecing together a turbo kit.

If you're truly wanting to go NA, start with pistons, rods, and a knifed crank, then worry about your headwork. Get a chipped ECU, and get it tuned. If you don't want to get your hands dirty, and you live on the east or west coast, look into talking to Darton. Last time I spoke with them, they quoted me just over $3000 for a fully built motor, to your specs.

....wow...

ls/v turbo. why not get both? the rod/rod bolts are the biggest points of failures in LS. since your tearing it all apart anyways why not put in new better everything. no reason you can't boost an LS/V.

use the ECU from the head. it won't matter much because you'll have to get a custom tune for it anyways.

but since you only need/want 180 an NA lSV will easily get to that. but lets not forget torque is the real mover.

I think you missed the part where the dude only wanted 180 to the wheels.
That's a tuned bolt-on LS/Vtec, or at worst, one with a small cam. Definietly don't need to port'n'polish, pistons, and etc.

@OP
You should strive for:
LS Block
ARP rod bolts
Shotpeen LS Rods
Pr3 pistons
ARP Headstuds
Headgasket of your choice
GSR/B16a Head
Valvetrain of your choice
Stage 1 cam of your choice
Intake Mani
A OEM throttle body port-matched will probably do you for this setup
and some sort of CAI

Hell, that setup is simple, reliable, and not to costly
And you can also do what I did, and get a Phearable ECU to get it tuned.
Alot of people dog on them, but there's several around here in cars that get beat on, on a day to day basis, and they have yet to fail.

Also stay on the look out for a not LS tranny (GSR, B16a, Type R, etc)
You'd be surprised just how much fun a car gets with a better geared tranny.

If you are not boosting the LS, go with the LSV.
