Default 2004 Odyssey won't shift out of park

I have being driven insane by intermittent gear shifter nightmare on my 2004 Odyssey EXL with 125K . Few months ago, I start experiencing an occasional shifting out of park issue with ‘P’ light on the dash is not lit . After the Mechanic changed the solenoid and the brake light switch , the issue got worse as the gear got stuck on the park 9 out 10 with ‘p’ indicator light not lit. I noticed sometimes the ‘P’ flickers when I shift back from either ‘N’ or ‘D’ and it would either stays on or simply off .

So, do I need to recheck the work done by the tech and make sure both solenoid and brake light switch are setup properly or should I look at a loose wires or transmission range switch .

Also, does anyone has the wiring diagram that shows how to troubleshoot the wiring connections.

Thanks for your help!

Sounds like the range switch is acting up. May need to adjust it. Check to see if the brake lights are working when it won't shift.

Ross, thanks for your assistance. Brake lights are working just fine. Would you happen to have a procedure on adjusting the range switch and the wiring diagram connections? Any pics will be super nice . my generic email kwiseme@hotmail.com if you wish to email me a pdf doc on the procedure.
Thanks a mill

I saw this info on odyclub.com but still it doesn't show the procedure

Rickety4u
Gear Range Switch
I was just wondering if a bad range switch will keep gear indicator on dash from working?

A/T gear position indicator does not indicate shift lever positions
.
Transmission range switch defective or out of adjustment
Shift cable broken or out of adjustment
Joint in shift cable and transmission or body worn

Check the D indicator, and check for loose connectors. Inspect the transmission range switch. If the transmission range switch is
faulty, replace it. If the transmission range switch is out of adjustment, adjust it and the shift cable.
Check for a loose shift cable at the shift lever
and the transmission control shaft.

When you hit the break to shift out of Park, do you hear the solenoid clicking? If not, then you have to hunt for a signal wire between the break pedal and the computer that controls the shifter solenoid. If you do hear clicking then most likely you just need to adjust the shift cable/lever.

shift lever stuck
in Park and the P in the shift indicator not lit?

I have a manual for a 2002 Odyssey that has instructions for trans shift range switch replacement along with the electrical schematic. I can copy and send if this will help for for your year Odyssey.

Thanks!

On the drivers side of the transmission there is a switch behind a cover that can be indexed back and forth to get different adjustments.

its most likely a bad brake switch...if you still havent fixed this issue, check to see if you have brake lights....im 95% sure this is the issue..

Yeah range switch is cheap and easy to throw in just to see if the condition improves.

high_revs ... on my initial thread, I did mention replacing the brake switch and yes the brake lights comes on.

boosted1993 - Honda Dealership wants $185 for Trans range switch.. I think you meant brake switch ...right

Anyone has a soft copy/eletcronic version of Odyssey ETM . If so email me a copy to kwiseme@hotmail.com
