B16a2 NA build questions from a "Noob"
Hey everyone. I have a few questions about my B16A2 I will be rebuilding here in a couple weeks. I am thinking about getting some higher compression pistons as well as shaving the head. Possibly some new rods, if needed, and doual valve springs, adjustable cam gears, and a Hondata s300 so I can have it tuned as well. I don't know if I will be upgrading any part of the fuel system or not yet? I have built a couple Hondas in the past and done several swaps, but have never built or tuned a motor, mostly just bolt-ons, etc. Basicaly I am attempting to do a low budget rebuild with better hp then stock. Any advice/ideas you have would help tramendously! Thanks.
How is your join date 2008 and this is your first post? Haha..anyways...most folks on here are going to tell you to search this kind of stuff and blah blah...
But really just make sure you have the right tools for the job. There will be a few "special tools" needed for a rebuild.
I would get a helms/chilton or some kind of shop manual...these books are critical in rebuilds. I am going to be doing a build for boost starting in a few weeks and all I have been doing is reading and researching. Anyways...get some good tools and a step by step guide.
Obviously tuning can be handled by a performance shop on a dyno.
Don't get in a hurry...take your time...
Good Luck!

This is also an option instead of tearing down and rebuilding. If you are just wanting a little extra power and reliability a conservative turbo set up that makes around 200-250whp is very achievable with a stock motor and still have a long engine life with regular servicing.
Well I should have done a better job explaining things too I guess. The reason I am rebuilding the motor is because the rings are shot and the head gasket is blown as well. At least thats my "diagnosis" with out actually pulling the motor apart yet. And I should have most tools needed, I am a mechanic and have aquired several odd tools for all makes and models over the years. Should being the key word. Anyways, I have thought about turboing it with all the less expensive kits out there these days (not ebay cheap
). I would like to see what kind of hp I can get from a NA motor somewhat buit first. I have owned boosted cars in the past and I guess I am just a little lazy, but they are a little too much maintinance and such for my likeing. That and this will be my DD all summer and when ever I can drive it the rest of the year. I live in South Dakota, lots of ice & snow in winter

I have posted several hundred times, I have no idea whats going on? I have, however, not been on the site for some time. Aprox. 1-2 years i think? Oh and I have researched lke crazy, I have somewhat of an idea, but as soon as I ask this on any other forum all I get is "stupid noob question" or "just search on google" etc. Never any actual help.

Just so you know, nothing wrong with getting some parts off ebay to save a little money. Such as piping, intercooler and a few other things.. Definitely don't buy an ebay turbo though. Not worth the risk

Well seems like you have the tools and a some knowledge since your a mechanic...I would for sure get a helms though...these books are very helpful.
If I can afford them, then yes. My budget is somewhere between $2-3k is all. I have been looking for some "slightly used" cams but everyone wants almost new price for them. That and no one around here realy has much of anything. Maybe a few people I havent talked with yet, but thats all.

im doing a similar rebuild myself and in my opinion the fuel situation all depends on what you are throwing in. if you go turbo you will def need to go bigger on the fuel. but just running basic bolt ons with a slightly higher compression. i think maybe go up on size on the injectors but other than that your fuel should be in good order. good luck with the build
Thanks for all the help guys! I will try to remember to take pics of all the steps I take so I can post a build thread later on once i'm all done. Oh and jap305, thanks for the advice on upgrading my injectors. I'll probably have to get an ajustable fuel pressure regulator, rail and guage to tune the fuel a bit more as well.
You could always find an LS short block with internals and do an LS vtec conversion with the golden eagle kit. If you take your time and build it right you are looking at a decent HP increase over the stock b16a2 and you already have the head and the transmission with pretty good gear ratios. I can't remember exactly what my friends build ran him as far as money but he was a senior in high school so he wasn't making bank.
http://www.zealautowerks.com/bseries.html; I can't 100% stand by there calculations but it is a good starting point. I used the B18a/b Block; B16A head; PR3/p30 pistons ; B18a/b or b20 connecting rods with a stock gasket and it calculated out to an 11.96:1 CR which is pretty nice.

Also, would it be nessicery to replace my valve springs with douals if I try to get somewhere around 12-12.5:1 compression? I'll probably keep the stock cams for now, just to save a couple $ but I will probably replace them eventualy.
