Default How much hp will a gsr block hold? Do you need the plastic timing cover for timing?

I know the title sounds dumb asking if you need the plastic timing cover for timing, I'm sure you do with a timing light. But if you bring it to get tuned, Can they time it via the ecu if I leave that cover off? "chipped p28"

Also curious how much hp these blocks can handle before having cylinder issues?

In case you're curious the build is

je 9:1 pistons, h beam rods "ls crank and ls rods" with golden eagle oil squirter delete, arp head studs, 8lb flywheel, "or should I reuse my stock one?" , aftermarket clutch, walboro 255hp in tank fuel pump, precission 1000cc injectors and a godspeed turbo kit from ebay, ported cylinder head, aem fuel rail, adjustable fpr, I dunno what else, i'm prob. leaving some stuff out.

In order to time the engine properly, the tuner must still have a reference point. The chipped P28 has no idea where the timing is because it can't see inside the motor. The only sensors that give the ECU any input on timing are in the distributor which is adjustable so that doesn't help you either.

If you forgot to put it on, you could just try to take a spare one and cut it up and slide it between the crank pulley and the block.

If that doesn't work you can use a piston stop to find TDC. This is a little device that goes inside the spark plug hole and the stop is just a little rod that comes into contact with the top of the piston. You then turn the crank and as the piston comes up the piston pushes the rod further out the cylinder. When the rod is at its highest that is TDC. Somehow you will need to mark your crank and your block to save this reference point for your tuner.

I'm in the process of putting it all together now, I didn't want the top cover front or back on and didn't want to put the bottom one on just for the timing marks if I didn't have too. I'm going to use it now though. I appreciate the imput. Any idea how much boost these cheap ebay turbos are capable of and at what point that block becomes weak?

The lower covers protect a lot of outside debris from coming in, even with the under shields on. The top ones removed should be no problem.

If all is well with the block, no more than 350whp. Yes, there are people who do more, but that power level is as safe a window as possible.
