Default May have solved an oil leak.....

Guys, had a very hard to determine where oil leak. Motor oil was dripping from around the cv axle input shaft on a 96 automatic. Cleaned motor several times and could not detect from where the oil was leaking from. So pulled and replaced gaskets on the valve cover, dizzy and vtec solenoid. I think the solenoid was the culprit. Now , down to one leak. The oil pan drain plug is leaking. After trying to stop the leak several times using the original plug , I installed and whole new plug with gasket.Still leakes. I now think the welded in nut is cracked and am looking for a replacement oil pan. Any ideas about any sealant that may work for a few more miles until I am successful in finding a replacement pan?

And as for the vtec solenoid gasket; I could not find one listed at any of my local auto parts stores. After paying an outrageous price at the stealership, Honda listed it as an "spool filter". Does anyone know if locals carry it under another name. In looking at a head gasket kit, I did not see one listed.

If you just need the drain plug to hold while you wait for a new pain. You could try pipe dope or some Teflon tape to hold it for now.

How much did you pay for the seal/filter at the dealer?

I put some pipe dope on it earlier. Not sure if it is holding. Got a used pan today at the salvage yard. The vtec gasket was 17 bucks at my local stealership. Hair, in looking at the same part at Majestic, their list price is 10.35, WTF.....I thought all dealerships at least used the same list price.

Majestic
15825-P0A-015 FILTER ASSY., SPOOL VALVE $7.39
Shipping Charge $7.94
Handling Charge $4.95
Total $20.28

If you want it delivered within 2 days, it's a $47 shipping charge from Majestic for that little O-Ring.... Stealership??????

You paid $17 at the dealership. That is cheaper than online and you had it home the same day!

Shopping online isn't always a great deal. Specially when ordering small stuff like this. I find the dealership is actually cheaper for a lot of the stuff these days. Easiest way to find out is to call the Honda/Acura parts dept. See what the part costs in comparison to online. Don't forget to add shipping & handling.

You are right, Ghost, I always try to spend my money locally when possible. I understand that if a business does not make a profit, it will soon close. That o ring would cost less than a buck made in America, prolly a third of that made in China. I assume Honda contains the right of manufacture and therefore can make enormous profits.......

My parts girl, and we are getting well acquainted, new exactly what that was and said it is a very popular selling part.......I understand.....

grey gasket maker always worked on any leaks ive had in past. valve cover gasket dryrotted and chunk came out spitting oil everywhere. used grey gasket maker and finished my day at strip, and home. but u need to clean areas leaking very well(brake and parts cleaner) i suggest to get any oil and grease off before u seal up.

Just replaced the pan with one for the salvage yard. That leak has been stopped. I think the old one may be cracked at the welded in plug nut. I use purple stuff to clean grease and oil off all my engines and trannies. It is bio-degradable and washes off clean with a water hose. After replacing all those gaskets, and pan , my last test drive showed no more leaks. But one thing, I have run thru several oil changes trying to fix this pan leak, and the last oil only had 50 miles and looked very dirty. I know this motor has many miles on it , but wondering if running some sort of cleaner thru the oil system would improve anything........

I ran 100% synthetic (AMSOil) 0w30/5w30 and a 1/2 bottle of Lucas oil treatment for a few oil changes and it cleaned all the crap right out of it.

Some guys swear by cleaning by adding seafoam to your oil. I have never used it in so I can't say anything about that. I do know that it works really good at cleaning out oil and carbon buildup on the intake, injectors and combustion chambers though.
