I will be getting a GSR motor in the near future for a h/b.
I was thinking about having a short shifter (ss) installed at the time the engine is installed. BUT, I am reading that ss can cause problems.
Is the stock GSR shifter pretty short?
Has anyone upgraded to a ss?
What are your thoughts on ss for a GSR?
Here are some of the things I've read about ss:
"I heard that a short shifter can mess up your syncros, but correct me if I'm wrong."
They can rattle and cause constant noise?
"All they do is increase shift feel and shift EFFORT. you can shift a tranny with a stock shifter just as fast as the same one with a short throw. If you are trying consatntly to shift as fast as humanly possible with a short throw you will wreck your tranny."
"many shops down here in cali dont recommend using short shifters. A mechanic at a shop called OverRev in ontario,ca told me that the ball on aluminum shortshifters tend to warp afer time and this can cause problems for the tranny. My friend had a short shifter in his b20turbo hatch for a while, and it started feeling funky last month. He doesnt drive the car much and I've never seen him misshift. We havent taken the shifter out, but the same guy at OverRev said its most likely the shifter warping."
Can someone clear all this up? Thanks!

My friend has a gsr swap in a 92 EG, the short throw he had (not sure what brand), caused the synchronizers do go out extremely fast in 3rd. He took it out and the stock gsr felt close to the same, i would leave it stock if i were you. Also rattle alot when at idle.
I believe that short shifters are a waste of $$$. It's just another mod that helps compensate for lack of driving skill.
I can shift just as fast with my oem shifter versus my friends with aftermarket.

yea but...some people just like the shorter crisper feeling u get. GSR shifters are yes, very short stock...but i just find my skunk2 short shifter more comfortable than stock.
the gsr shifter is perfect in my opinion...to each his own...if you want the feel and crispness of the short shifter without screwing up your synchros..get aftermarket bushings for the stock shifter...
There is nothing wrong with a quality short throw shifter. The ones that are rattling, warping, bending, or breaking or cheap Ebay specials.
A good solid one will improve the feel, and shorten the throws. On my CRX it is one of my favorite mods when used with good polyurethane bushings.
As far as wrecking the tranny and synchros, the idiots out there doing that could manage to tear up their synchros with the stock shifters. They're just shifting too fast for their brain. You need to re-learn your timing.
Shifts should be quick, not hard. Pretend the shifter is an egg while shifting.
