1996 accord ex
I jus bought a 1996 accord ex that needs new motor I am gettin the car towed to a machanic that is going to put a nother vtech with 80000 for $1400 that includes the tow motor an labor is that a good deal I paid $800 for the accord an the origanl motor over heated an warped the heads can I have the original motor rebuilt I need advice
Engines are cheap for those cars. As for the labor I have no idea what he is charging you an hour. You have to take a look at the engine to tell if you can rebuild it. As for the head, if it's warped it's out of the question...
You paid 800 for the car and will end up paying a total for 2200$ for it to be working nicely again; or is there more work beyond the engine? If you're really only spending 2200 total, i think it's a decent deal.
You might just find another head for it that will be cheaper and a garage (at home job) if it's just that.....

That's a big gamble trying to put another head. Especially if you're not sure if the original motor had a bhg. If you have a machine shop work the head, it may cost more than another engine.
yea l would check and see how bad the engine is 1st. then go from there, u might be able to resurface head, also bringing some compression down so the rest of engine needs to be up and in good cond. if engine needs to be replaced, even if u have never done a swap its easy for a direct same engine swap. take pics and mark connectors do it urself, save $
Last I heard, machine shops charge more than the mechanic does in labor. You're better off getting another block. You could get another friend to help you out and save the money to buy them beer and pizza.

If you can't do this kind of thing yourself, I'd go with the new motor option. You could easily spend that much paying for a rebuild. I don't see how people think $1400 is being "raped".
If you look up book time to swap the engine in that car it's over 10 hours from what I can remember. It doesn't matter how fast someone says they can do it, most shops charge the flat rate book time.
So let's say 10 hours @ $80 per hour (most places charge more). That's $800 labor. If you don't include the tow, you're getting an engine with 80k for $600.
If you are getting some sort of guarantee, like a 30 day warranty the engine is solid, it's a good deal. Is he doing the timing belt, water pump, etc before installing the new motor? Is this a reputable shop with a good track record?
People think engines should be dirt cheap because they can find them off Craigslist for a couple hundred bucks. It costs more for a shop that's worth a **** because they have to stand behind their work, so they're gonna pay a bit more from a wrecking yard or whatever that will stand behind the condition of the engine.
