Mad Mike, my brother just called and his 200k 98 is throwing multiple cylinder misfire codes just like my 96 did. The EGR port clean out solved my problems and was wondering if his setup is like mine. As somebody posted , if your ports are not cleaned out SOMETIME, they will be later.....

 

Is ia a 2.3 or a 3.0? The only way to clean out the egr system effectively on a 2.3 is to remove the upper manifold plenum. Once removed, you can access the egr ports. The F23a1 egr system also plugs up in the upper plenums port where the flow makes a 180 degree turn. You almost need a spoon to scoop out the crud that builds up in there.

 

Not sure which motor , 92, but as I understand you, BOTH 2.3 and 3.0 will clog up at sometime on high miliage motors......

 

Usually the ECU will detect it and trip a DTC P0401

 

YES, the OBDII seem to set a code, not always for EGR-sometimes just a misfire, better than OBDI..........

 

I am not familiar with the F23 variants. As the others have posted, a misfire is probably related to the EGR being clogged up. Easiest way to determine if it is EGR would be to drive the car at a cruise speed and see if she bucks. If so then most likely a carbon fouled EGR system. EGR will clog up on any engine that is putt-putted around. The old Italian tune-up is one of the ways to keep help clean out some carbon build up. But if the soot has started to harden into chunks that usually requires some good ole fashioned disassembly.

 

Found out it is a V6 and the car is stumbling at low RPM. Planning on taking down the EGR system down to the ports and ensuring they are clean and working properly. Will let ya know what we find.
