Default Would you consider buying this EF?

[kind of a noob question]

A 91 civic with 1996 1.6 VTEC engine & automatic transmission?

The price is very good.

But I never considered going with an automatic transmission. I always preferred manual -- more power.

But then this engine is sooooo much stronger than the very worn out 1991 1.5L, non VTEC, engine that I have now that I'll probably not mind at all.

So i'll probably not miss the manual tranny as i'll be going from a worn out formerly 92 HP engine to a much fresher 127 HP engine.

Am i right?

Anyone have thoughts on this?

I find it kind of odd that someone would ever swap a stronger engine in to an EF with an autmatic.

Also, i imagine that, later down the road, replacing an automatic tranny would be much more costly than a manual one.

Is that correct?

I welcome any questions and/or comments.

I have not driven it yet.

Hi Fog,

Thanks for replying.

I think swapping trannys would be somewhat of a waste. Rather i was just thinking that i'd sacrafice my preference for manuals for an engine that's much much stronger than i'm used to.

Unless i won the lottery, i'd probably want to just leave it as is.

thanks again

and i shoulda mentioned that i haven't driven it yet. I guess that will answer my question well enough.

I think you'll be wasting your time if you aren't going to swap transmissions. A fast car with an automatic transmission is like hitting on a girl, getting her to your bedroom, and realizing she's a guy. It's just no good.

I would question how exactly they did the swap, i would assume they are using the stock auto trans for the car.. but that would require it to still be obd0. The point being that no obd0 ecu is going to be properly tuned for a sohc vtec engine.

I think you'd be pleasantly surprised how easy/inexpensive it is to convert the vehicle to a cable manual trans. then use an obd1 ecu and attain the full potential of the engine.

i can almost garentee that unless they swapped in an automatic p28, did the extra wiring, and also picked up an obd1 auto trans it's not running vtec.

o/p, buy it if you want, but i'd personally swap it to 5 speed. even with an lx/dx transmission my a6/z6 mini me is super peppy and gets up n goes no problem. plus you're all set for if u want boost or a bigger motor

Again, i very much appreciate the responses.

But i should clarify that "it's a good price" provided that i'm going to keep the transmission.

If i add the price of swapping a tranny it becomes less of a good price. If i need to swap then there's simply better deals out there which would suit myself and my budget better.

And after reading the comments from you honda experts about the possibility of it not running VTEC there's a good chance that it's an absolute crap deal.
