225/50r16 vs 255/40r17
Im stuck between two wheel setups for my ek hatch project. It will be in the 350-400whp range, and will be street driven regulary so traction will be an be an issue, and yes i am aware no matter what it will be an issue, but the more i can get the better.
I plan on a very wide stance, I will be cutting and rewelding the fenders. I am also aware of the impact running so wide will have on scrub radius etc.
So i am torn between two sizes, both with yoko s-drives on xxr 527 wheels.
225/50r16 - This will give me 8.1 inches of actual tread width on the ground and and overall diameter of 24.8 inches.
or
255/40r17 - This will give me 9.1 inches of actual tread on the ground and a 25 inch overall diameter. I thought it would be cool to go this wide. partially to be differant. I dont mind 17" wheels on eks if the stance is right, i figure the massive fender flares will help the look.
Do you think it would be worth the extra weight, stress and cost to run the 255's for only and extra inch per tire of contact patch? Any opinions welcomed.

Well, I would recommend going with the 17's (simply from a tire option perspective), but possibly with a lighter wheel. 527's are heavy, no matter what size you choose.
I have yet to get specific weights on the sizes in question, but i do know the18x9.75 527 weighs 20-21 lbs. Not to bad IMO.
I have weighed 17x9.75 527's, and they were roughly 21.8lbs. They're not grotesquely overweight, but there are better options out there. Are you currently 4-lug? That would make me see why this is the better option out there. Not many 4-lug wheels this wide.
You are correct sir.
