Mugen intake reviews, facts/opinions
Whats going I am looking for a new intake for my JDM 98 R I currently have the whale ***** PWJDM and i hate it and the high pitched whistling sound it makes is so ****ing annoying it has to go! I am looking into the mugen intake system however I dont know anyone who has it so I am asking you guys on views opinions and any knowledge you have. My first question is does it make that embarrassing whistling sound at any point? is there a noticeable power gain, response, I am sure it'll change how the motor sounds when your mashing the gas please get back to me asap with feed back thanks
I havent actually tried that but I am pretty much done and over with the PW intake the back part of it was rubbing on the harness and it practically rub a hole in the the intake. Theres no hole yet but it is pretty close to being one since it wore down pretty bad. Anything on the mugen intake
My boss used to run one on his si. It was nice, I dont think I would personally pay that much for one (they can run over 1000 depending on the car). They give an aggressive tone but they are annoyingly loud. He had pnp with a 69mml throttle body and it was still pretty quiet.
I have a GSR teg and they are running around $800-$850 which is astronomical in my opinion but you gotta pay the cost to be the boss sometimes and anything that'll make my Type R scream is ok in my book that price is making me sweat but maybe ill ask for it for xmas. So far no whistles if this thing whistles i will have a cow!

I also have a mugen intake in my car (96 spec), I really like it but have only had stock before that. Sound is awesome. Its been on there for years but I do remember a slight power gain. Guess it depends what you're paying for it.

I just recently installed my Mugen Intake. I've had it on for about two months now, I love every bit of it. I noticed increased acceleration and power especially at 5000RPMs and pulls hard all the way to red-line. It gives a nice growling tone to it when your WOT.
For those that say that can't see spending $800 + on an intake, that's fine I know there are $ issues or whatever the case may be. I try to buy only the best for my R, I'll say this you "gotta pay to play", besides this intake has been dyno proven to make gains
Anyone that has owned one will say the same thing, it's a great intake money can buy if $$$ is not an issue.

There is also the CT comptech ice box that makes a little less than the Mugen (thats what i've read). It is also a little cheaper and has almost the same design as the Mugen.
The other thing is that a Mugen intake will always be worth money, so if you're buying a used one you will get most of the money back when you eventually sell it. If buying new then not so much
Be patient and diligent, and you'll eventually luck up on a used one for half the price of new or better. I've bought three over the years- one for my R, one for my Si, and one for my RSX. All three were bought slightly used and complete, and I paid less than $400 for each.
Get a comptech icebox instead. Almost identical design and about 1/3 of the price and use the rest of the money you saved on a mod you will ACTUALLY feel a difference. I have one and it doesn not whistle, good fitment and looks stock. I think the whistling is more noticeable if the pod is exposed.

my thoughts on the gsr/itr
leave it stock with a k&n air filter if you keep it NA
or
save for pressure. a used jackson kit if you're on a budget or a garrett or precision 50trim or disco potato is a great fit on a stock engine.
NA power on these engines is expensive and nets you very little

I saved up and bought the Mugen intake. It's as quiet as stock at idle, and you can barely (if at all) notice it at low RPM's. When you put your foot into the throttle you will surely notice a difference in sound. No whistle sound either. It is solid once installed.
Here's some install instructions I put together. There's also a low quality video I made (at the bottom of the post) to try and compare the sound from stock vs. Mugen equipped. The audio in the video doesn't do it justice. Sound from the outside video is much more apparent than the interior vid though.

The Comptech/CT Engineering unit is probably best bang for buck, but I feel the Mugen unit has the highest overall quality. Somewhere on H-T you can try and find the dyno that compares all popular units (Mugen was best throughout the powerband, but Comptech was right with it most of the power curve).
Just do your research (as you are) and decide for yourself what fits your budget (and personal needs).

Had the AEM CAI, Sold it, waited 2 years and bought the Mugen Intake. Never looked back. If anything, I hate to modify the same part twice, so do it right the first time and save money!
You really won't look back, its a great intake. I'm glad I did the right research!
