Default 94 Accord DX - ECU Glitch? Idle Surge and Hesitation only sometimes

I have a 1994 Honda Accord DX. Sometimes the car runs great. Other times I am having some problems. When I have the following problems, I shut the car off, and restart the engine, and it may or may not run good. The problem I am having at times, is a surging idle, and a hesitation, stall, backfire, sputter, or whatever else you want to call it at about 1200 to 2000 rpms. If I give it a lot of gas, the car will run fine, but when I let off, the car will hesitate again. I thought it may have something to do with a possible ground shorting out, or something to do with the fuel relay solder job.

Any suggestions?

Bleed the coolant system or air. Air pockets interfere with the IACV and FITV operation, both of which control idle. It is a no cost fix that only takes a few minutes and may correct the surging idle.

I have bleed the coolant system, will try again. You are right, it seems like air pockets in the coolant could cause intermittent problems.

You cleaned the egr ports....not the valve but the actual ports?

Are there any stored codes?

Lost Again, I cleaned the ports and valve. The ports were almost clogged and the valve was filthy.

Recently I bleed the coolant system and it seems to have fixed the surging idle and hesitation problem. I dont think I was letting all of the air out of the system on a previous attempt to fix my problem.

I cant find anywhere to check the engine codes. AutoZone says the car is too old and they cant check it. Have not tried the dealership. Anyhow, the car seems to be fixed for now. Thanks for the responses.

The '94 Accords have a blue two pin connector in the front passenger foot well under the glove box on the far right. Use a wire or a paperclip with one end in each female connection. This will activate the check engine (CEL) light codes. Count the number of long and short illuminations and get back with the info.

To reset pull the ECU fuse or unhook the battery for a few minutes.

If the CEL isn't coming on...best guess, note guess, is tht the issue is because of the low coolant or air in the coolant...only question is why was it there???? Good luck.

Classic Oxygen Sensor symptoms. Bad o2 Sensor with no check engine light is a possibility, especially on OBD1. A Denso replacement is about $55. Check it before doing expensive, labor-intensive stuff like fuel pump.
