Default over-revved, runs poorly, diagnostics

Hey friends, I have an 04 accord ex coupe, v6 motor. recently 4 weeks ago I did the valve adjustment-- she ran fine afterward, no noise, etc. I put in new ngk iridium plugs, all effected top end gaskets, oil and filter (always mobil 1, 5w-20)..

upon Thanksgiving highway travel, I was getting off at an exit and mis shifted (over revving the **** out of the motor for about 2 seconds before I caught it and corrected) now i'm getting seemingly valve chatter and TERRIBLE puttering at idle. (like its fighting for correct air/fuel)

checked the plugs, look new still, compression varied 1 0r 2 pounds, but overall 145 psi across all cyl's (book calls for 135 min, max var. 28 psi)

then I was trying to convince myself it was affected by crappy gas, so I added Lucas injector cleaner, Heet water remover, and for ***** and giggles dumped in a few ounces of Lucas oil additive (to hopefully quiet the lifters?)

for more kicks and giggles I tried doing the ckp relearn procedure as outlined by honda, the CEL went away for a mile or two then came back, the symptoms persisted throughout though

at idle it "hunts" as i call it- kind of gurgling like a alcohol motor.. if i slowly increase rpm's to about 3k then let off immediately the bottom end falls out and then eventually tries to regain, gurgling once more

my worst fear is that I briefly floated the valves-- I hear constantly this is a huge occurence in the j30a4 m/t cars. but wouldn't this suggest a lower compression reading?

should I continue checking tps, map, o2, and iat, etc sensors? or am I spinning my wheels to the inevitable valve cover pull and valve inspection?

any help would be very appreciated!!

You might want to do a leak down test. I am wondering if you spun a bearing.

Do not dump more parts into it, until you test.

And you did the compression, followed all procedures? I would do it again. Over revving is bad news.

Your's is an "interference" engine, meaning one or more pistons will strike and bend open valves if you signficantly over-rev the engine. $$

but if he bent valves he'd lose compression in the cyl with bent valves

do a leakdown, double check compression and follow the instructions, check oil for oil shavings, check vacume lines(spray carb cleaner at vac lines) idle surging can be caused by a vac leak....and double check that you dont have hairline cracks in the porciline of the plugs

The valves are bent...

HA! Just ask half the owners in any of the forums. A lot of people have done it. It happens.

A fuel cut cannot prevent a mechanical over rev.

Sounds like a bent valve to me

check the valve lash, I have seen them go all over the place after an over-rev

Huh? A fuel cut will not prevent a mechanical over rev, even with an auto transmission.

What did your check light come on for? If its your cpk and random misfires detected at multiple cylinder banks you either jumped timing or your crank position sensor took a crap

Common problem on these are bent valves from over reving. Very sensitive interference engine.

To check if you got an engine/compression problem. get a simple vacuum gauge and the reading should be between 18-21" Hg with a steady needle. Check at idle and also at 2000 rpms.
