Default tie rods question

Why do tie rods, inner and outter, go bad besides time? Too much steering maybe, or too fast steering, or why do they go bad and need replacement? Im asking because I was told by a mechanic to replace them but it never occurred to me to ask him why specifically?

Default Re: tie rods question

Even with grease in the joint, you have 2 pieces of metal that constantly rub against each other while driving. When those pieces wear out, you get slop in the joint and it's time for replacement. It's unavoidable, but hard driving and aftermarket suspensions that change the factory angles will make steering/suspension parts wear faster.
