stupid question from a noob...
well my car broke down and everything is pointing towards it being the timing belt, resulting in bent valves....so heres my question: i have the d15 with the 4sp manny...i found a d16z on craigslist for 600 bucks and it has under 100k miles, but will it bolt up to my stock tranny? or am i going to have to swap it into a 5sp. if i have to go the 5sp way, how hard is it to go to a 4sp to a 5sp?! i did do a little bit of searching, but honestly i dont evening know what to search for or where to begin...so i thought it would be a little bit easier to ask for guidance, or links....thanks!

Yes the D16 will bolt up to your 4 speed. I have DOHC ZC with a four speed. Not exactly the quickest thing off the line but I get great gas mileage. But! If it's a v-tec D16 you'll have to wire up for OBD1 and v-tec......not to mention DPFI to MPFI. Hope this helps you atleast a little.
If it's a D16Z6 then it's from a 1992-1995 Civic EX or Si and it's OBD1 and has VTEC. So yes, you'll need to convert from DPFI to MPFI and go to OBD1 and add VTEC.
It could also depend on where you are, but $600 for a Z6 seems a tiny bit on the pricey side from my experience. Maybe they're pricier than the newer D16Y8?

The 4 speed transmission is the HF gearing minus 5th gear. The bolt pattern will mate to any D-series aside from the bastard D16A1 style engine. The required to take full advantage of the D16Z6 would be as previously stated: DPFI to MPFI conversion then either a "1-wire VTEC" comversion or an OBD-0 to OBD-1 swap and a P28 ECU. You could sacrifice power and just stay OBD-0 and run a PM6 ECU as well.
The cable 4 speed to cable 5 speed swap is simple... It's a bolt in swap (making sure you stay away form '88 stuff 'clutch') - the linkage and mounts are all the same. The only difference is on the vehicles the STD and HF use the smaller hubs so you have to reuse the 4 speed axles; unless you feel like swapping knuckles of course. The transmission side is the same.

im just trying to figure out the simplest/ easiest route to go....and its proving to be hard....
like i said i have done a little bit of searching, but the only thing that popped up was the "mini me" swap, and that confused the hell out of me so i got off and watched a pretty lame movie....
i just want my car to effing run....my lil ford escort threw a rod monday, i bought the ef on wednesday, and it stopped running yesterday, and the shop my dad told me to take it to, to run a diagnostics test doesnt open til tomorrow, and im tired of depending on my girlfriend to get me back and forth to work and classes. im half tempted to go beat the @#$! out of the guy that sold me my car, but i cannot go to jail bc some douche screwed me out of 1200 bucks.....sorry if this got to "ranty" im just pissed off and turn to the internet to wield my words of despair....so i apologize for it ...

Just so happened he put the car up for sale and it sold right before the belt snapped. Bad luck. I know if I'd sold you a car and the timing belt snapped right after I sold it to you, I'd feel bad, but I wouldn't refund you or anything. It's not my fault or your fault. Just bad luck on your part for being the owner at the time.
Timing belt probably was due for a chance, but it breaking could have happened anytime. The previous owner might not have even realized the belt needed to be changed.
Look on Craigslist and car-part.com and the marketplace here in case you can find a stock engine too. When you do your swap remember to change the timing belt and water pump. Don't want to go through this again and it's going to be difficult to know when the service (IF) was done on the new engine.
well i found out that the timing belt skipped 2 notches and it didnt bend any valves, so i feel like i got pretty damn lucky....so i get my car back tomorrow
