98 integra ls auto will not let me shift out of park without using the key for the lock release .

i have not had time to take a good look at it for now its an inconvenience but manageable .
Anyone have experience with this problem .?

like he asked. If your brake lights arent working then it wont shift out of park.

 

finally got a chance to check it out today and no my brake lights did not work . i removed the shifter console and everything seemed to be in order . i checked all the fuses and they all checked out . then i noticed the light for the shifter was blinking . I had never seen that before and then i also noticed a check engine light . After checking the 3codes they had something to do with the shifter. i cant remember what numbers they were as i deleted them and everything seems to be working fine now . My brake lights work and it shifts out of park finally . I still want to get figure out the problem because i dont want to get stuck somewhere without being able to shift . could the issue be the switch on the brake pedal itself ?

 

you can still drive the car like that my girlfriend had the same problem with her accord and she drove it fine until it got fixed Its just unsafe since your lights wont come on.

 

If the brake lights did not work the problem is most likely the brake light switchm [sticky], replace the switch and you should be OK. 94
