You're hooking it up backwards.

That is hard to do since the cables are so short, but check anyway.

Sounds like a 51 series battery where a 51R should be used to me. Seen it happen a lot, terminals are backwards... Pics of battery and bay?

I was thinking the same thing thing, you need an international battery for foreign cars. The terminals are reversed for foreign cars, that is only way to mix them up.

Was it a new battery? but the battery is marked positive and neg.

did you happen to wet the engine area before putting in a battery?

You might of arched it, when you installed the positive terminal is it possible you had a long wrench and touched metal at the same time?

Did you double check your grounds? Ground from valve cover to body? Thermostat ground etc?

Overall wiring?

They sell a spray in a can that cleans electrical connection and helps keep them clean and well connected , Its blue at a hardware store. I dont know the name but i used it on my car on all the sensors and connections , its worth the money and time thats all i will say.
