Did you miss shift. Maybe the linkage is screwed up.

As mentioned, first make sure the linkage works. If so, drop the transmission.

there is no tranny pan maybe u should take it to a mechanic it don't sound like u have an idea what your doing. taking that transmission apart should be done by a professional and is not something your avg joe can do. i know how to build motors and install clutches and motors but know nothing about transmissions and i would never attempt this on my own and i know a fair bit about cars. you might just wanna look into buying a replacement transmission it will probably be a cheaper option. does the car shift through the gears or go into other gears at all? look underneath and make sure the linkage is connected properly and nothing is broken. if everything is ok. id buy another transmission that one is most likely FUBAR! goodluck

the guy who had it before me drove it around then said he was told the cv joints were broken. but i know broken cv joints wouldnt make it stuck in gear. i was told it could be a bent shifter fork

You can check the transmission by removing the fill/check bolt. Use a diff tool or stick your finger in it to see if there is any fluid. Check the slave and master cylinder as well. Your clutch could be burned out too.

ok so heres my problem. its not stuck in gear but when in neutral when the clutch is released it still feels like its in gear and it starts to move like in first then stalls but when i put it in first and release the clutch it doesnt move at all like its frozen then it stalls right away. it was empty of tranny fluid so i filled it with new oil and its still doing it.

If its stock, I doubt it would be a fork. Ive seen them bend, but they were mated to far from stock engines.

Most likely what happened is there is no fluid in it or the fluid is trashed. In those cases you will start having issues with gear engagements starting with 5th, then 4th, then 3rd, so on and so on. 1st 2nd and 3rd see the most harsh engagments so there usually the first to go. but with 5th acting up I would check the fluid. The input shaft bearing will seize and the 5th syncro with grind down and seize the fork.

But I dont know what its doing, Im not there so I have no idea.

well it had no fluid at all because it took 2 full qts of oil. do you think if its seized it will loosen up on its own now that i filled the fluid or am i screwed and have to swap trannys?

If thats indeed what happened, Unfortunently not. You will need a new trans. or if you know someone that can rebuild it for you for cheap.

How does the shifter feel? Does it seem like it's actually moving? If someone drove it with no fluid it's probably junk, the gears will eventually weld themselves to the mainshaft and start shreding teeth. I'd pull the tranny and pop it apart, might make for some interesting carnage pics if nothing else.
