Default turbo vs. vtec HIGH END

i got a 92 hb with a ls about to be boostin 7-9lbs. and i only race freeway bury needle action. i know everyone and their cousin has a gsr in their hb. i was wondering if i would still pull from them high end or would the torque only help me low to mid range. basically how is turbo on the high end and would a b18a turbo beat a b18c in an all out cannonball run?

Hehe any turbo Honda motor is gonna be waaay faster than one that's non turbo. Don't put too much stock in VTEC, it ain't THAT much better.

turbo hondas can't make highway runs, unless your built. thats a good way to blow your motor.

I wouldn't say turbo hondas cannot make highway runs. It will all depend on the tuning. I would at least get a egt guage to keep an eye of exhaust gas temps. To answer your question I would put my $$$ on the turbo honda against any non-turbo honda except one with 2 wheels.

You can, but you must keep it short; like 15 seconds or less under boost. I did a 70 to ~150 mph run in 5th gear (LS @ 10 psi), and I melted all of my pistons. They were JE pistons too. It's also very hard on your bearings because of the load you are exerting on them performing a roll-on in 5th gear.

Live and Learn, I had just joined the FI ranks back then (like 2 weeks boosted at the time) and was still very ignorant.

a couple things...

a) what you're talking about is something you should never ever do regardless of if your car can take it or not

b) if you're turbocharged and don't absolutely humiliate someeone in the first 10-15 seconds, you really should just let off and go home

c) melting JE pistons = MAJOR bad tuning / fuel system failure.

When I blew my LS motor, it was only from trying to boost too high on the fmu, not too long. I made numerous 70-140 and 70-150 runs with no problems.. the motor ended up blowing at about 60mph from an overboost... live and learn.

Like the man said "Bad tuning"

If you boost too high on an FMU, it goes lean. A lean condition would mean bad tuning, right?

hmm this discussion has prompted me to look into wiring my EGT into the AEM EMS and adding additional fuel if the EGTs start climing ridiculously, in the event i find myself in a high speed chase or something.

a) It's my car, I was on a highway in the middle of Wyoming, no other cars.

b) agreed

c) I should reiterate. They weren't Totally and catastrophically melted. The ringlands partially melted on 3 and one melted through. ..and this was on a Hondata equipped and tuned car, tuned for 12:1 A/F under boost. I don't think it was bad tuning or running lean, what I think it is is that Honda motors arent designed for FI so they can't dissipae the heat quickly enough, so if you boost too long the heat buildup becomes too intense and something lets go. You melt a ringland, you burn a valve, whatever. I now wonder if my pistons would have lasted with oil squirters installed.

I've seen a customers motor with JE pistons that he hammered badly and the engine still worked. He was running like 15:1 compression in a minisprint 600cc engine. I guess he got some sub-par gas or something but the detonation hammered his domed pistons into dished pistons- but they stayed in once piece and kept on running the motor. The only reason he tore it down is because he was getting way less power due to decreased compression. I was amazed they held together.

I always hear peole saying "don't boost for more then 15 seconds", I don't get it!!! I 've turbocharged 3 Honda's and have made "highway runs" 100's of times that icluded boosting for much longer then 15 seconds. **** my slow *** 4 door Auto Civic EX that I boosted had to withstand 15 seconds of constant boost ALL THE TIME. All my cars have been untuned as well, just make sure they are getting enough fuel etc.
