Seriously if you just look here first you'll be one step further than most people on this board because it'll answer about 90% of the questions asked.

I find manuals inexpendable, but only valuable if I'm going to get my hands dirty. I could read a manual all day long, and if I don't actually touch the car, I'll still go "derrrrrr" when I open the hood.

Inexpendable? Gotta love this new English.
So you're saying you can't follow direction? That's pretty much what a manual's purpose is.

I find the best way to learn about a part of your car is when it breaks, or needs to be replaced. Do proper research and troubleshooting and eventually you'll know a lot more than your realize.

Ok thanks, I have an auto class but it's basic stuff I already know.
I think I'm going to replace my gaskets and hoses or something so that I can get my hands on everything.

Don't worry, I'm not taking what you said critically, but I will explain what I meant.

Inexpendable. As in, NOT expendable. As in, very useful. I realize there is some question as to the actual existence of that word, but I don't really think that's the point here.

I can read a book all day and not really learn unless I can touch what I'm learning about. I can read a paragraph in a book, and by the time I'm done with it that paragraph, I won't consciously remember what I read. But, if I am able to get hands-on, I will learn much easier.

I am an educated person, and good at my profession. I learned it mostly by experience, not by reading.

It's not to be used as a textbook to be studied. You take it out to the car with you and refer to it while you're working on the car. Nothing to memorize.

I agree. But I think you missed my point. For me, a DIY book is unexpendable if I can also be hands-on. Otherwise it's virtually useless to me. And, yes, the book accompanies me while I'm working on my car, not while I'm inside at the kitchen table.

A.D.D my friend ... this is the same way i am when i read. i can read small blips of important information. but if it's 10 pages of reading i wont retain anything and my mind wonders while im reading thinking about 10 other off topic things on my mind. I research online then do things hands on. that's the best way i retain information

I actually have been unofficially diagnosed ADD, but since it's unofficial, I don't run around saying I am ADD. And I'm old enough that I've learned to deal with it long ago, and I don't feel the need to go get an official test.
