Binding inner CV on 1998 Accord
Hi all,
New to the forum and have a little problem I need help diagnosing. My son has a 1998 Accord LX 4 cylinder with 98,000 miles. I just replaced the two CV axles as the one on the passenger side was toast. Boot was open and grinding and clinking at the outer CV.
Replaced the drivers side, test drove without issue. Replaced the passenger side and as we test drove it, the wheel was causing a strong pulsing vibration and making noise. Put it back up on the jack and pulled the wheel. I then rotated the wheel hub and noticed that at about 180 degrees the inner CV would bind a bit and cause the transmission to sort of bump up a bit until it rotated past the bind point then it would spin back and the trans would come into the correct place. I assumed we got a bad CV so went to the parts store and exchanged it. Put it into the trans and seated it. Before I put the outer shaft into the wheel spline I rotated the shaft and it was nice and smooth. Flexed the shaft in all possible angles and still spot on. Put the hub assembly back together, tightened everything up and as soon as I rotated the hub it would bind again.
So could it be the transmission or possibly a bent wheel hub or suspension part?

Don't buy Oreilly new axles(not sure if you did or not just saying). They are junk. I've had to go back and have the shop replace two "new" axles. The first one was clearly missing grease inside the inner boot which made it wear and it started making noise and the other the outside band was completely loose and all the grease had leaked out.
