Jet Skis, PWC, Sea Doos??????????
This is probably the closest to right forum for this. Anyone have any experiences? I was to get one in the dead of winter for spring and summer. I figure they are probably the cheapest then.
I want a 2 - 3 seater that is fast and will not break the bank. I am a complete NOOB to this. I have rented them before but basically know nothing. Are these a smart used buy?
Thanks,
Kyle
P.S. Mostly fresh water usage if that matters.

Well, yes, they can be a good buy, but you must check it over pretty well, biggest concern is the motor of course. being most ski's are two stroke, you must watch the oil injection. if anyone is interested in learning more, ill post, otherwise, ill talk to you in private kyle
i am looking for a Polaris 750cc 3 cylinder 2-stroke. they can be had around here for under $2000 with trailer. this is something you could pull behind an integra or civic.
PWC are fun and simple to maintain. the new hondas are sweet but too much $$$ and the 2 stroke motors are strong like bull and are light and plenty fast enough. I don't like going faster than 50mph on one of these cause it gets kinda squirrely, and water feels like concrete at 25mph, so i dont wanna know what it feels like at 2x that.
i love to go to the lake with all the rich people and their powerboats and jump their wakes. it totally kicks your ***...great workout and hella fun. its a good time of year to get one, also. get the service manual and go thru it completely. ask around and find the shops and find a place that do good work if necessary.

you're probly right. in the last 5 years i have only ridden a Bombardier 1100cc (didnt like it), yamaha waverunner - very refined. and the Polaris 750...the Polaris looks like the simplest design. thats why i want one and thats why they're so cheap. its just my opinion, so it cant be wrong.
Good info here.....
God, once I get this bike paid off, jet ski is next for me. Ive rented once before, and it was a blast!

Also, Honda's PWC are turds. They consumer a **** load of gas, have bad turbo lag, and are about 1.5 mph faster on top end than a Seadoo GTX 4tec. The seadoo will murder the honda out of the hole, and it would take a long time to catch up.
For the sit downs Seadoo's are the ones to get.
Personally I like the stand ups. You can do more tricks on them. Nothing like diving under the water and then shooting out.
You can just barley see my standup's in the garage.
When you get one there are a couple of really good places to get parts.

i am thinking of what the forum description should say...i want it to mention PWC.
but no lawnmowers
...or should we describe it as for all honda products? one of my longstanding domestic friends just got a honda mower...i give him hell for it.

yes yamaha's are pretty reliable, however, if you ever want to do tricks, and want an overall better ski, Seadoo is the way to go.
Yamaha's are very reliable, very stable when you are stopped in the water, engine compartment is not cramped like the Seadoo's, a lot easier to find parts for the yamaha, and the GP 1200 is the fastest ski on the water besides the Ultra 150 from Kawasaki. Seadoo has one good ski, the XP, Seadoos 3 seaters are slower then Yamahas 3 seaters and have some of the worst handling. I have been riding and working on yamaha wave runners and kawasaki jet skis for about 12 years, my brothers and I have 3 of them and 1 Kawasaki with many after market parts.
If you want a 3 seater that wont break the bank get a 97 1100 Yamaha wave venture.
In my opinion I would go with a Yamaha, All the jet skis that my family has owned they have taken the abuse from us the best.

This is a little old. Finding aftermarket parts for a Seadoo is very easy.

Yamahas are nice skis, my personal opinion is that the Seadoos are better.
I'm stuck with kawasaki because I like the stand-ups the only ski that is actually a jet-ski. I don't care for the Yamaha stand-up.

If you want a RELIABLE ski for a LONG time, the Yamaha is the way to go. Ask a rental company and see what they use all year long.
If you want fun, and speed, go SeaDoo. BUT, be prepared to spend some $$ if things go wrong.
I am just curious as to what people think makes a ski more reliable. The only think on a Seadoo that is different than a Yamaha is the Rotax valve which is fairly cheap. The first thing I do on any two-stroke motor is ditch the oil injection. They always clog eventually no matter what you do to them. I have rebuilt several Seadoos and they are no more expensive then any other bike. The motors are actually easier and cheaper to com by then most. The only engine failure I have seen is caused by a stuck oil injector or someone rolling the bike and not knowing how to get the water out of the engine.
Ski's are alot different than bikes or cars. There are numerous things that effect their reliability, one of the biggest being personal maintenance. By this I mean always checking for oil, that your ski is pumping water out the side or rear (cooling effect), flushing when your done riding, checking the prop frequently, lubing the driveshaft, etc. If you think these are jump on and ride, then put it back on the dock machines, you are wrong... I worked as a mechanic first at tigershark, then at a place that services seadoo and yamaha... my family owns a GP1200 and a Seadoo XP, both two years old. Both have very different charateristics and will last a long time if maintained properly. I never sold jetskis so I'm not biased towards either. High compression on a jetski isn't always the best thing since you're at full throttle all the time. And the seadoo motor is mounted completely different than most other skis, it is positioned way up front in the nose of the ski. If you like jumping in the ocean, prepare to break seadoo motor mounts. Anyone who has worked with them knows this is common. I am sure they have addressed that problem by now though. The XP is a great carver and quick out of the hole. The GP1200 I have has awesome top end and great stability. I have never had a problem with either. Stay away from polaris, and kawi which is ok, just can't match the quality or performance of the other two. IF you have any more questions, feel free to IM me.
