Weight Reduction Question (and manual/power steering rack difference)
I'm putting my B20v into a CRX chassis in the next few weeks.
I would rather have a manual steering rack and no A/C. Does anyone have a rough estimate of how much weight this might save?
I'm trying to plan the total weight of the build, then scale it to check how close I was.
I know the A/C B-series compressor is pretty heavy (25lbs atleast) but I don't know about the evaporator/fan/heater-core/AC lines etc... The bracket for A/C and P/S are not light either (2lb apiece?) - And the P/S pump and lines are pretty light but still a few lbs..
Does anyone have a complete number of A/C system and P/S system weight?
Also - the main thing I'm wondering about is.......
Is there a weight difference between a manual and power steering rack? I'm hoping to find a CRX with manual rack because I don't want to loop the lines.
Thanks so much!

The weight difference is minimal maybe a few pounds... The real difference is that the power steering body is bigger in diameter than the manual rack. So unless you swap the crossmemebers, you have to ghetto rig it. You can do that by wrapping the power rack bushing around the manual rack bushing, and installing it in stock fashion in the power crossmember.
thanks so much dude.
I don't like this ghetto rigging you speak of.
But that brings me back to my original question.....
Was there actually CRXs in production that HAD powersteering?
Because i can delete the P/S pump tumor off the block/motor/belt-drive without breaking a sweat. And if there is a manual rack in the CRX, I'm golden and done with the project.
Did Honda actually put P/S into the CRX? (I'll avoid it at all costs when I buy this CRX.)
thanks again!

No, USDM CRXs didn't come with power steering as a factory option from what I know.
The difference was the "variable" rack in the Si verses the rest. I can't recall the exact lock to lock differences... There is a "Quiafe Quick Steer" rack kit you can buy perfect for Auto-X applications...
The JDM/EDM could get power steering as an option.

Lock 2 Lock on the Si variable rack was 4.1. It's tighter in the center and starts getting easier after about a 1/2 or 3/4 turn from center. This is accomplished by varying the angle of the teeth cut into the rack itself, making them further apart:
Not an actual Si rack:

The standard rack is 3.88 turns lock to lock.
The Quaife rack inside the standard gearbox gives 2.4 turns lock to lock, but it's a work-out.

Wow this is exactly the information I was looking for.
Do ALL Si's have the 'variable rack' you speak of?
As for the ***** 2.4 LTL ---- too twitchy and sensitive at 100+mph)
As for the standard rack 3.88 LTL (non-variable/ALL CRX except Si) ---- this sounds pretty good. My EG6 is 3.25 LTL and it's twitchy under torque steeer @ 50+mph
As for the variable rack (I'm assuming found on all CRX Si regardless of year?) 4.1 LTL sounds PERFECT.
Does anyone know if the Si's came with A/C? cuz the one I just bought/sold had A/C and that will be an unwanted feature I will have to deal with getting rid of (will probably strip entire heater/fan assembly and put speakers/gauges in the vents or soemthing)
Thanks guys!

But you still have an A/C button lurking in your climate control. Oh wait you removed the entire climate control... So what did you put in it's place? gauges?
the only reason I'm worried about removing entire climate control/AC/heater is that my windshield might fog up in the rain... but I guess I can just roll my windows down - it doesn't snow here MUAHAHA!
thanks dude, I removed a CRX DX climate control system a long time ago (with a sawzall >.<) and there was certainly some weight to it.

thanks 94eg. So does anyone have more info on the Si variable ratio rack?
I want an HF chassis, and will be dropping in a manual Si rack with ES bushings. Will this be a direct bolt up? or will i need to modify things.... assuming i have an OEM HF (88-91) and I junkyard an Si manual rack - is it a direct swap with the parts I listed? if there are any needed adapters or mods, i would like to know about them before I call the junkyard and have them pull me a manual rack... thanks.
and as far as a wheel and a quick release locking hub - is there anything special I will need or can i just pick up an NRG quick-release hub/lock/adapter/momo or sparco wheel?
I'm trying to build this car in my head before I start opening my wallet just to find out I need more unforseen parts that will raise costs...
thanks HT (i keep sayin i need a HT tshirt, where can I get one...)
