Default 88 d16a1 5speed transmission VSS problem

I keep popin a CEL for code 17 VSS malfunction, All my cables are fine, the mechanical speedometer is working and went in fine when I did the reinstall for trans/motor. The problem mainly happens when I am in 4th or 5th gear and I let off the gas to slow down. VERY FRUSTRATING!!!! Old trick I just throw into neutral and kill it and restart at a coast, resets the computer and I can get another 10 miles before it happens again. Any help would be great but would maybe be easier to try and change the VSS. Just wanted to know if anything else might be the culprit.

Does the motor perform differently when the code comes on? What is the point of resetting it if it will just come back? Unless the car runs like poo.

Runs fine just idles 100-200 rpms higher than normal takes a little longer to come down from 1300 rpms also I keep getting a code 9 for no.1 cylinder sensor but the distributor is old and never been touched so it will be changed, hate having that damn bright yellow light on in my face saying "Look your cars f---ed up".
