Well the speedometer doesnt work the rpms do. I tried replacing the cluster that wasnt the problem. The speedometer need will go up sometimes like its resetting itself then drop to zero again. Could the problem be the speed sensor?

The motor is a z6 head with a d15b bottom end. The trans is a y7 trans. Im running a p28 ecu with a jumper harness. Tried putting my p2p ecu on it and it also didnt help the situtation. im leaning towards the speed sensor on the trans. Anyone else have this problem?

 

Try cleaning the connector on the speed sensor it gets pretty filthy. Do you have any CEL's?

 

ill plug my p2p ecu back into the car and scan i know it will rease the codes but theyll come right back. The check engine light has been on.

 

Why have you ignored a CEL until now?

You shouldn't need to install the P2P ECU to pull a VSS circuit code. The P28 ECU will also store such a code.

 

When i last checked the check engine code it was for both oxygen sensors. Is the b series speed sensor the same?

 

What are the current codes?

 

i have the same problem, it randomly works and then just dies down and stays down. i have a vx with d15b vtec-e if that makes any diffrence

It doens't always throw a cel. Check your plug at the vss and see if its corroded. Its very common. Make sure your getting voltage to the vss also.

my speedo gets picky sometimes. I tap the bezel and shes 100% after that for a few months.

 

mine likes to wrk when ever it wants some times it gets stuck at lets say 20mph when im actually going 45 or so

 

If cruise control works (if the car has it) and there is no code 17, it's a good indication that the VSS is working*.
Now, check to see if the cluster is getting a signal from it. If it isn't, chances are there is a short or a
corroded/broken wire. If the cluster is getting a signal, most likely the problem is the cluster.


*I would test the VSS to be sure, it's not too difficult. Also make sure the ECU is getting a signal.

 

I know this is an old post but i was wondering if you found a solution. I have a similar issue.. 97 ex running p28 w/ jumper, everything works golden except the speedo. Had it work intermittently once for half an hour, Except the odometer actually racks very insignificant mileage about .1 per 50. Plug my p2p back in and its back to working. Tried the p28 in a 2000 el and it worked fine. so i bypassed the jumper and plugged right into the p28 for the speedometer and still no... No cel #17 until i am driving and i let off the throttle, count to 5 and the MIL will turn on everytime on the 5th second. The vss connectors have been cleaned with contact cleaner and i swapped in another VSS. Anyone have any thoughts on this minus run the p2p (This was just to test the p28 before i bought it and now i'm just dead set on fixing it this car won't always be a y8)
