Default Shifter issue would love feedback on...

I bought a used 93 Civic si, 1.6 v tech and am looking to restore it ... my problem it is hard to get it into first and second and it will throw out of second gear randomly...but only when the car is warmed up (after 30 min of driving) otherwise when its cool out like today was it shifts perfectly fine and doesn't throw the gear, my shifter also needs some work as it is quite floppy lol...so bushings? full shifter (rods and all) or forks? linkage? Any ideas I do my own repairs and would like comments from anyone who has had the same issue hopefully

sounds like you need to rebuild your trans if its popping out of gear. you can rebuild you linkage just google it and 12 bucks for the bushings from ebay is a cheap fix and upgrade

yea if its popping out for gear its prolly got bad syncros, so your shifter should be the least of your worries, but from the sound of things it could use some lovin too.

Thanks for the ideas yes it definitely needs some TLC I do have a secondary tranny so I will try that first see if it does something helpful...other than that everything is mint except some minor body work it was worth the $500 I paid for it and don't mind sinkin some decent cash into it love the body style and way it dangles lol...drive fast, drive hard, love your car

Post some pictures of it!

Yeah it sounds like you need some tranny work. I'm in the same boat. Pull it, pebuild it or replace it. I'm probably going to buy this:

It's definitely pricier than some routes, but I just want to get my car up and running. Unfortunately, I can't afford a swap right now because I'm making a payment on my DD. There are also trannies available on craigslist, the marketplace here, etc.

Start with the linkage bushings first, since its the cheapest and easiest thing to do.

If the bushings are slap worn out, there may be enough slack in the linkage to not allow full engagement of that gear.

Otherwise, I would say a worn/damaged shift fork, or worn syncro dogs.

Have you checked the fluid level yet?

Check your linkage carefully and replacing worn bushings won't hurt if you are on the path to restoration. Typically what happens in the SOHC trans is the Mainshaft and Countershaft bearings in the clutch case will begin to walk and cause the trans to pop out of 2nd. Its a common problem. If you plan to do a rebuild which is pretty simple on these transmissions I would advise staking the bearings in with a punch to keep the bearings in place. Basically you will be putting punch marks around the bearing circumference to crush the aluminum case to hold the bearing in place...I will search for a photo.

While you have the transmission open check the 1-2 sleeve for wear as this will cause gear engagement issues as well. A worn fork will also give you some similar issues.

Sweet so my clutch is now chattering and grinding :/ I ordered a full clutch kit and other parts that don't come in the kit...may as well go for the gold since I want to restore this little speed demon...by the sound of my clutch it won't be movin at all if I don't lol! I plan to check the tranny when I pull the clutch seeing as everything will be open then anyways (ordered bearings, bushings, fork and linkage as well and already have another tranny here just in case...) can't wait to get the mundane fixed so I can start upgrading just love this car!!!
