Default 97 civic throwout bearing or input shafter bearing?

I have a 1997 Civic DX with abou 115,000 miles on it. Everything is pristine except a noise from the transmission. I know it is most likely the throwout bearing or input (pilot) shaft bearing making the noise. I've been driving it like this for a year or 20,000 miles and now I must get it replaced as it is very annoying.

I will do the best to explain my symptoms. I can hear a noise difference as it quiets and gets a bit louder when I am idling in neutral and pressing in and releasing the clutch pedal. That is not the annoying part. The worst part is when I am in gear driving. In most of my gears when I am accelerating or decelerating it is almost a grinding sound as opposed to a whistle or squeeling noise. It isnt like a gear grinding sound but almost like a growl or something (a little deeper sounding than a heat shield rattle I guess). It is very loud and louder in high RPMs in gear only. When at idle I can hear the slight noise with the clutch out in neutral and it is quietest when I push the clutch pedal in (Even if in gear with clutch disenganged it is quiet).

Im pulling it apart in 2 days and wanted to do my research before I waste time and money.

Which do you think it is, release bearing or input shaft bearing?

thanks in advance

I have been googling for 3 hours and I am a bit confused. It would be a dream come true if a honda tech would check in about now .

The best way I can explain it is almost like a grinding version of vtec kicking in. Even non car savvy people notice when they rid with me :/

I am having the same exact problems in my 97 dx with 118k miles and everything else is near perfect. I'm positive it's my throwout bearing and ibs. I have seen everyone recommends this kit http://m.autopartswarehouse.com/sku/...EXE08801A.html as well as replace your throwout bearing. Hope that helps, helped me.

Input shaft bearing is bad.Its very common, you need to replace all the bearings or get a low mileage used tranny
