Default Rebuilding B16a2 or LS/Vtec with it?

I'm getting ready to move cross country and be unemployed for the near future, and needed a project to work on. I wanted to keep the prices under $1500.

My B16A2 is burning oil, nothing really bad, but about a quart a month. I have a slight oil leak from either the distributor O ring, and it has a crappy unorthodox crank pulley with no timing marks. So there is a few things that I want to correct. I also custom built a harness for a tuck and was planning on pulling the motor to do it.

Now the question, should I rebuild the b16a2 with higher compression pistons and upgrade the cams? Or should I pick up a LS block and build a LS/VTEC? I'm pretty competent with a wrench and was wanting a project to while learning more about my motor, I just don't want to jump in over my head with the LS/VTEC and bust my budget.

i mean if you do high comp. pistons with the b16 and some cams and some bolt ons, your gonna be right around the comp ratio as you would be with a LSv

thats true.
i mean i have a b16 into my ef hatch that im finishing up.
gonna do full bolt ons. and it will most likely keep up with the gsr.

now granted the gsr has more displacement and if gsr has full bolt ons, its gonna walk on the b16.

i personally like both. not really an LS fan. even if it is the LS-v.

i agree with you. I would prefer a GSR over my LS-V but hey it came in the car and its better than a stock b16 so i wont complain

Go with the LSV...so much more potential and room to grow. You can only do so much with a 1.6

Thats what I was thinking, I could pick up a GSR block + higher com pistons and drop the b16 head on it.

$1,500 might not be enough for rebuilding block and vt+cams. Either set up. Bearings, arp rod bolts and studs, oil/water pump and machine work adds up.

Options:

1)Sell the B16 and find a JDM GSR long block

2)LSV: Use your pistons or RS Machine ITR/PR3, cams+vt= you might be over budget

3)Put new rings and bearings on your stock engine and call it a day

Not true, a b16 head flows almost identical to a type R head. The Gsr heads has slightly smaller and straight through ports which creates more mid range but it loses out on top end

I found someone to buy the motor/granny for 1k, so I will be picking up a b16b with LSD. I just gotta move cross country and collect my severance pay from the army.
