Icon3 Spongy brakes + brake light?!

So I started up my car this morning to head to school, but as soon as I put it in gear my brake light came on. I did check if it was the hand brake by pulling it up and then releasing but it still remained on. I then opened the brake reservoir, checked the brake fluid (it was max), opened the cap and closed it tight, turned off the car, then pump the brakes 3 times and then turn on car again and the light went away but I still feel a really spongy pedal.

I know bleeding may help but does anyone know why the brake light might have came on in the first place?

In my experience spongy pedal + no brake fluid loss = bad internal seals (blow by) in the master cylinder.

40 degrees this morning, i'm suspecting that to be the issue too but not sure exactly how they would relate.
