90 F22a1 engine removal
Good morning. This is my first post here as a Honda owner. I recently purchased a 90 Accord 2 door 5 speed with 370k miles from a neighbor. He was the second owner after his mom and put 25k mi a year highway miles on it for the last 10 years. THe body and interior are in great shape. It has the original clutch and the original timing belt. Since both need replacing I have decided to pull the engine and since it's out I may as well rebuild it.
After searching the forum I havent been able to locate some info as follows;
1 Where are the engine pick points?
2 Do I have to completely remove the engine mount assemblies?
3 Do I have to completely remove the half shafts?
4 Can I remove the clutch slave cyl. without disconnecting it?
Any other tips would also be apreciated.
THanks in advance for any help.

you questions suggest you have not done this before. i hope you are not gonna attempt to rebuild an engine or a transmission without the proper amount of experiece. changing the timing belt and clutch are not too hard though. original engine with that many miles will need a rebuild though
timing belt is easier to change with engine removed but its possible to due with engine in the car. i found it easiest to remove the engine/tranny with a load leveler to help the crank pulley clear the frame. without a load leveler it is easier to remove the tranny first. yes half shafts will have to be removed along with the passenger side engine mount. get a haynes manual before you attempt to tackle this. the engine will need to be lowered and a few suspension parts have to be removed to drop the transmission.

lol there is absolutely no way that car has the original timing belt.
The engine pick points are the front left and the rear right. You will two hangers that you grab the engine from.
The key to removing the engine it to remove the front to back support member that runs underneath the engine. Then you will slightly raise the engine and remove the transmission side through bolt and then let the engine drop down on the transmission side so that you can remove the entire mount then you will raise it out. I do not talk about removing the other mounts because they are so easy, it's the transmission side that is the hard part. You will see when you remove it.
Yes, you have to remove the half shafts. The key to removing those is to use a crowbar and pop them out of the transnmission with a couple good pops. If it won't pop out at one spot, just move 180 degrees and try the other spot. You do not need to disconnect the slave cylinder there are two bolts beneath it that allow it to be removed and just pushed out of the way.

THanks for your response. You are correct in that this my 1st attempt at a FWD engine removal I have R & R several small blocks over the years. In regards to a rebuild I have already lined up an experienced shop as the nuances of this engine are beyond my current learning curve. That said I have located a pick point at the power steering pump bracket but cant seem to find one on the opposite corner. I am planning on removing the eng/trans as a unit. I am following the Haynes Manual but they leave a lot out.
In regards to tthe half shaft removal I understand that they need to come out of the transaxle. Do I need to remove them at the outer end to accomplish this? Also in looking at the slave I see where it unbolts at thr tranny but it seems to be hard lined over the top of the tranny to a junction point on the frame.
THanks for your help. Back to the fight!

The timing belt info is from the previous owner. His mom owned the car from 90 to '00 and put 100 k mi on it. He owned it from '00 until this year. He wasnt sure that his mother replaced the belt but he advised he never did. So I guess that at a minimum the belt has 250 k mi. It doesn't sound right to me either so it will be interesting to see what's left of it when the engine comes out.
THanks again for the info.

THings arre moving along on the removal. I found the second pick point under the tranny cable assembley and have the 1/2 shafts out.
My dumb question of the morning is this. On the rear of the engine there are two heater hose outlets. On this car the were connected by a length of hose. The 2 heater outlets on the firewall are connected to the left and right sides of the engine. Can anyone tell me about these two rear side connections?

Engine is out, broken down and off to the shop. At 370 k miles it looks in great condition. THe clutch on the other hand was toast. THe timing belt appeared to be a replacmeent as there were some important pieces missing such as the crank sfaft key and the counter shaft tensione bolt. I'm gueesing the presuure from the balncer kept everything in line.
2 questions if I may?
Any reccomendations on where to purchase a rebuild kit
AS the tranny is 5 speed tranny is also high mileage I am considering a replacement. Are there any later model trannys that will fit a 90DX 2 door?
THanks in advance

An update. The engine is finally going back along with a rebuilt tranny. Lots of lessons learned for sure. These are stout vehicles and I'm already looking forward to my next one.
Before this one goes away I do need to address the seat belt issue. Any ideas on how to replace the travellers with a solid mount system?

good to hear its going well. i been wondering the same about the seat belts myself. i would much rather have one mounted to the body. im guessing you can get the holes drilled and threaded by a shop and install maybe some other accord seat belts
