.... need help asap D16Y8 knocking ....
ok so heres what happen. i was driving and noticed a small tick like i might be low on oil so i parked my car and let it cool for about 10mins checked the dipstick and i was almost out of oil. so i added prob 3qts and started to drive and the ticking went away. drove prob 10 miles and then my car sputtered real quick then started knocking bad. got the car towed home. checked oil today and i was way over so i drained it to the correct amount. and then checked my coolant and to my surprise there was none. refilled my coolant cranked car and still knocks. oh and when it started knocking it began to lose power. anyways the car didnt over heat remained at operating temp not sure where the knock is coming from sounds louder from the head but some people said it is prob the block.
over all problem:
low on oil - refilled - drove 10 miles sputtered then started knocking - then cuts off when i stopped
low on coolant - refilled
didnt overheat at all, no CEL, no oil light, nothing
no leaks under the car anywhere
car still knocking
trying to figure out what might be the problem and what could of made my car lose coolant when it was full the day before and what the knocking could be. and the head on the motor was rebuilt maybe 40k miles ago

Is the knocking/ticking coming from the block or the head? Pull the oil pan and look for shavings. Sounds like spun bearings.
what about the ignition timming being off? the haynes manual said that could be a reason for it knocking so i checked and mine is way off from where the lines should be at
Here's how you answer that question. Correct your timing issues and see if the knocking is still there. If you do and it goes away, you've fixed your problem.

To correct the timing I aim the gun straight down and looseen the distributer and turn it. Then when the car is off the red line should line up with the pointer correct?
