Shifting is not smooth... what is the cause?
I'm just got my first manual car, a 91 LS Teg. and the shifter does not move through gears smoothly. Requires some extra pressure to push it into gears. When I was driving my friends focus the shifter moved much more smoothly. Is there a problem with my Teg or is this normal? If its a problem, whats wrong?
I had the same problem with my 91 DA...... Let me ask you this first... do you have a short shifter? If so, problem might be coming from the SS. If the tranny has no modification done to it, then I prefer changing your tranny fluid. I did the same to mine, and after a while the gears were lining better than usual. But if the problem consists, then I prefer a new tranny. You still have to remember that its a 91. That tranny has been through a lot in the past 11 years.
thanks, I will try changing the fluid. No SS on my car and its only been through 105k miles.
I think it should do 2 times that before any major problems. Hopefully...

yup, I too suggest you change the fluid. Used Honda MTF or Redline MTF, both I heard are excellent.
Do not use motoroil in the tranny.

Yea, get some new MTF in there, Honda, Redline, or Royal Purple. Does it not shift smoothly into all gears, or just some. Could be your synchros.
start cheap, and work your way into the more expensive parts. Start with shift linkage bushings, Honda MTL change, and see how that works out for you. If that doesn't fix it, I'd recommend having the main shaft bearings replaced, as when they get worn, the mainshaft can move too much, causing gear alignment (and gear change) problems. The tranny in my 95 DB8 I rebuilt recently, and it feels like a brand new transmission. Hope that helps.
Thanks for the help everyone, and the indepth post from Vaportrail. Car is shifting smoother with new fluid but still not like new. It will do for now until I decide if I want to keep this car for a turbo project or go with an AWD. I kinda like the idea of a non sporty looking sportscar (like a Turbo Legacy Sedan).
