Default Car was cranking, now all power is lost on start

98 Civic Hatch
Automatic

Hi guys. before i started any work on my car. I started it up (boosted it) to make sure it ran. It ran, but was sputtering. No biggy. So off I went to repair my problem (leaking gas tank)

So i went ahead and changed the gas tank which sucked on my back in the driveway, took a few days. And with that I installed new spark plugs. The other ones were gaped way too much from not being changed in awhile (electrodes worn down).

So away I went to start my car, again boosting it. The car attempts to crank over but will not catch. I wait a few more minutes and try again. This continues for about 4-6 more tries.

I again went ahead and attempted to start the car, and once I went to start (III) the whole car lost all power and when I go back to ACC (II) nothing happens. Its only when I remove the NEG cable from my battery from being jumped that I hear the relays reset and I can attempt another start. But once I reattempt the same thing happens.

So I was thinking that it was the battery, but seemed too odd for the battery. So I removed the kick panel to look at the computer.... look what I found...

Could this be causing my issue?

That definitely needs to be replaced. And yes that can be causing your problem.

BEFORE YOU REPLACE ANYTHING find out where the source of that moisture is coming from or you'll be replacing the next ECU.

+1

check the blower motor area, maybe the drain is clogged. could also be coming in the door area where the speaker wire runs, theres also the 2 holes that the harness comes out from. the bottom one for the cabin to light harness, and the side one for the engine harness. check all that, if there isn't anything leaking, move on to the windshield and sunroof if applicable.

Hi all. I finally got the car started last night (battery replaced/cell possibly shorted). The male connections to the circuit board were rusted. They were working, just that they would eventually rust through. Good thing I work in avionics and have the equipment/know how

As for the moisture issue. We all know how low it sits on the floor, and I'm in the Maritimes in Canada. So wet winters/salt on the roads is the cause. Going to invest in a different type of winter floor mat this year.

Thanks everyone for your help. But after starting I got 2 more issues now, so I'm going to open two more threads.

Thanks again, this place effing rocks.
