valve train (i think) clicking
Hi,
i just did a valve adjustment 2 nights ago and im still getting a clicking from the engine. its throttle relative, i know what a suspension (CV etc) clicking sounds like, and its deffinitley not that. I set the int. to .006" and the exh. to .007" (on the "open" side of spec) as presicely is i could, rechecked after tourqe down. ive got a 98 prelude sh, i/e/p/v-afc (h22a4)...
-where specificaly is the sound coming from (i know its probably in the head, but is it rockers, springs, gremlins...)?
-is it doing causeing/indicating any eccesive wear?
-what can i do to fix it...?
THANKS

ticking is a loose valve.
hammering is a tight valve.
If it varies with RPM's while in neutral you've got your source.
...bear in mind the injectors tick a bit themselves.

ok id say its more of a "tick" than a "hammer" and it is a constant sound while in neutral, so itd be ... which? if its a loose valve then ill have to tighten the retainer nut right (same one that keaps the lash adj in place eh? helm is in the garage, ill look).. im tightening them to speck (2kg/m)...huh

recheck the adjustment...make sure the engine has been cold (sit for 4 hours).
you'd be suprised how many people confuse the fuel injectors with vlave problems....but it never hurts to check valve adjustment....

1:18amEST, AND I BEAT IT!!!!! thanks for the advice guys,
i just finished up, went for a QUICK spin (at least for a bolt on h22a4) and heard zero ticking. it was the valves, i got some email advice from todd m. (ntpog), he suggested setting the valve lash well under stock. i put it at .004int and .005exh and that cleaned up the ticking sound. puuuurrrs now.
i found a neat way (at least me, Mr. newB Mechanic thinks so) to get the lash more consistant and accurate, using 2 gauges (get one at +.001, tighten the valve so that it can barely come out, tourque it down, pull it out, and test the correct gauge for the spacing you want. was way more consistant than funbleing around with 1 gauge). i took a pic or two and will do a quick write up for all of the future budding mechanics out there..
time for some fast orange, shower, wine and bed...
whoo hoo!
thats a neat trick with the screw driver, ill remember that, thanks
